Choir's weather-themed world premiere

Exeter Philharmonic Choir is preparing to begin its 2025/26 season with a very special musical first at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 8 November - performing an ambitious new choral work called The Weather Book, written for the choir by one of the UK’s leading contemporary composers and highlighting Exeter’s unique status as the home of the UK’s Met Office.

The new work for soprano soloist, choir and chamber orchestra, composed by Cecilia McDowall, is a joint commission with a top chamber choir from Sweden. Gustaf Vasa Kammarkör performed the first movement called ‘Celsius Rising’...

Furniture salesman retires after 26 years

A furniture salesman plans to devote more time to fishing and his family as he retires after 26 years in the business.

Peter Short, aged 64, who joined Fairway Furniture’s Newton Abbot store in March 1988, retired on Saturday (June 28).

Peter said: “Quite a lot has changed since I joined in 1988, the store is now so much bigger and many people have come and gone. When you have been working all your life and you look back over the years, I know it’s the right time for me to stop.

Bus & Coach Station celebrates 50 years

Stagecoach South West and The Devon General Omnibus Trust are marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of Exeter bus and coach station on Saturday (5 July) with a one off celebration at the city centre site.

The event will run between 10am and 4pm and will showcase over 40 vehicles – many of them vintage - which have all used the city centre site across the years.

As well as being a one off opportunity to see such an historic gathering, visitors will also be able to enjoy free rides around the city on a selection of heritage buses – not to mention the rare chance to ride...

A group of residents from Kingsbridge have been recognised for their bravery in bringing a rogue trader to justice following an investigation by Devon and Somerset Trading Standards.

The three residents along with Sergeant Rachel Ward and Trading Standards Officer, David Keys are the proud recipients of the Trading Standards Heroes Award, given out a glitzy ceremony in Harrogate today (Thursday 3 July)

Contractor fined for land drainage offences

South West Highways has been ordered to pay more than £11,000 in fines and costs. The case was brought by the Environment Agency.

In 2013 the company carried out repairs on Kersham Bridge at Bridge Reeve near Chulmleigh. The work required the erection of scaffolding in the River Taw under two of the bridge’s three arches. South West Highways was expected to start work on 19 August and take approximately four weeks.

South West in vanguard of surge in self-build homes

People who want to build their own home will be able to turn to their council to make their dream a reality, under measures announced by Nick Boles yesterday (2 July).

The Planning Minister said he would give aspiring self and custom builders a new Right to Build, which would enable them to ask their council to identify a shovel-ready site for their project.

Prospective self and custom builders will be able to register their interest with the local council, who will then be required to offer suitable serviced plots for sale at market value.

Security is being stepped up at all British airports after United States officials raised fears that terrorists in Syria and Yemen are working together to develop explosives, which could be smuggled onto planes.

The Department for Transport said the extra security measures were not expected to cause "significant disruption" to passengers.

Police are asking for the public’s help to trace a 39-year-old missing man believed to be in Ilfracombe. Officers are extremely concerned for the welfare of Nicholas Le Corre who is thought to have visited St Philip and St James Church sometime during the night. Police believe he may be visiting local churches and beauty spots and the public are asked to report any sightings to police. Broadclyst residents vote for outdoor sports

People in the parish of Broadclyst have had their say on how to spend money on outdoor sports in the town - and they've opted to support a broad range of very different schemes.

In a joint project run between Broadclyst Parish Council and East Devon District Council, residents voted on how they would like £11,800 to be spent on outdoor sports in the community. Well over 100 Broadclyst residents took part in the voting.
