Pitch perfect: Football meets rugby in Exeter’s Strive ‘25 takeover

Exeter City Community Trust, the charitable arm of Exeter City Football Club, is stepping into a new sport as it joins a major national initiative to grow women’s rugby in the city ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

The organisation, which is more used to the beautiful game than the oval ball, is joining with Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City Council as the delivery partner for the Strive ‘25 Rugby Challenge, a national programme aimed at engaging 25,000 women and girls in rugby across host cities. Estuary Trail at heart of cycling campaign

The Exe Estuary Trail between Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish is a star attraction of a new national cycling campaign launched by VisitEngland.

As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK, Bike Week, gets underway, the 26-mile family-friendly route is being promoted across the country as part of ‘Cycling Breaks in England’.

Land train receives council support

In recognition of its potential to bring more visitors to the town, East Devon District Council has waived the rental for the first 12 months for the use and storage of the land train in The Maer car park, Exmouth.

Visitors using the land train will also benefit from reduced parking with a full day costing just £3, instead of the usual £6.

The train will run from the Maer car park on the hour calling at several places along the seafront before heading inland at the marina and calling at the bus and train station at half past each hour. It will then stop at the town centre...

Brand new fleet for Potburys Removals

Potburys’ white and green liveried lorries will be a regular sight on the streets of Exeter and East Devon thanks to a fleet upgrade by the local Sidmouth removal firm.

Over the last three years Potburys has been steadily modernising and increasing its entire fleet of removal vehicles. Councillor Paul Diviani, leader of East Devon District Council carried out an official ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the recently restored Withycombe House in St. John’s Road, Exmouth.

The magnificent period manor house which in later years was converted to a school by Devon County Council, has been painstakingly restored to its former glory by skilled craftsmen and converted to luxurious accommodation. The spacious homes include two-bedroom apartments and three and four-bed houses with generous gardens, set in a parkland setting.

Police Commissioner seeks public opinion on dealing with alcohol fuelled bad behaviour

The views of students and young adults will play an important role in the battle to cut alcohol related crime and misuse in Devon and Cornwall. Firefighters attend car blaze on Heavitree Road

One fire appliance was sent to Heavitree Road at 5.32pm yesterday. The road is known for being particularly busy during rush hour times.

On arrival crews confirmed one vehicle well alight.

Crews used two breathing apparatus sets and one compressed air foam jet to extinguish the fire.

Council to close half of day centres

Devon County Council is to stop providing direct residential care for older people in most of its homes so it can help more elderly people live independently at home or in supported accommodation, and in other residential homes.

Half of the county’s day centres will close with the rest being retained, supporting the most vulnerable and people with disabilities.

Devon already buys 90 per cent of the residential home places it needs from the independent and private sectors.
