As the summer sun shines across Devon, families are heading outside to enjoy paddling pools, beach trips, and time by the water. But for children under five — the age group most at risk of accidental drowning — this season also brings hidden dangers.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, one child drowns at home every month in England, with toddlers and preschoolers most at risk. Hole in the Wall owners inundated with offers of help

The owners of an Exeter pub severely damaged in a blaze have been inundated with offers help from business contacts, friends and customers.

George Sloan and his business partner Rob Skinner have spent the last two weeks over seeing a massive clean-up operation.

But they said they had been touched by the amount of support and encouragement they have received, sometimes from complete strangers.

"We've had electricians, plumbers, decorators and even Exeter Chiefs players, many of whom were regulars, offering to help," said George, pictured in one of the burnt out rooms...

Residents invited to speak at open forum

People in Exeter are being given the chance to quiz councillors on any “burning” issues for the city.

Exeter residents are invited to put forward questions to members of the joint County and City Councils' Exeter Board, at their next meeting on 17 July at 6pm in the Civic Centre.

The Board allocates 15 minutes for their ‘open forum’, with three minutes per speaker, with a maximum of three to four speakers to allow time for discussion.

Previously, residents have prompted debate about issues including street lighting, homelessness and waste collection.

Murder inquiry launched in Kingsbridge

Update: 2.50pm - Police have made a further arrest in connection with the murder of Alex Peguero Sosa.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said a 22-year-old man from Kingsbridge was arrested at 6.30pm on Sunday (6 July) on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice.

He remains in custody at Torquay police station.

Body found in search for missing Tiverton man

Police searching for Matthew Foot who went missing from Tiverton have found the body of a man in woodland at Rackenford. Matthew was last seen at his home in Loxbeare on Thursday 3 July and police have been concerned for his welfare. The body of a man was found at Rackenford by police at 11.50pm yesterday (Sunday 6 July). The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. Formal identification has not yet taken place but Matthew’s family have been informed. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Green energy capacity grows by 37%

A major report published today by independent renewable energy experts Regen SW, reveals that we now generate enough renewable electricity in the South West to power over one quarter of all homes.

Renewable electricity capacity in the South West has grown by 37 per cent in the past 12 months to nearly 1.2 GW – and the region now generates 8.3 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources.

The South West Renewable Energy Progress Report, produced annually since 2004, shows the South West leads the way in small and community scale renewables.

Judges form the Royal Horticultural Society will descend on Exeter tomorrow (Tuesday 8 July) to assess the city's entry for Britain in Bloom.

After an absence of over ten years, Exeter is taking part in this year’s prestigious competition. Judging will take place in Exeter tomorrow (Tuesday 8 July) before the results are announced in Trowbridge on 18 September.

Costa Coffee to open in Debenhams

Princesshay has today announced that a new Costa Coffee will open in Debenhams on Wednesday (9 July).

Located on the first floor, directly above the main entrance, the new Costa Coffee will command views onto Princesshay Square and focus on sit down coffee, pastries and snacks rather than a take-away service.

A record number of rowers from across the south west will be competing on Saturday (12 July) at the annual Exeter Regatta.

71st Bishop of Exeter installed

The 71st Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Rev Robert Atwell, was installed at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday.

He was processed down the High Street by children representing Devon’s 131 church schools, a group from the Young Farmers Association, and the Barnstaple Youth Marching Band.

Devon schools make music together

Just days after Glastonbury, Devon staged its very own music festival with the 10th Schools’ Music Mix.

More than 3,000 people spent the day at Westpoint near Exeter enjoying large scale musical workshops, professional performances and a variety of activities.

Pupils and students from over 75 schools took part in the day.
