Science on tap: Exeter pubs to host Pint of Science 2026 

Some of Exeter’s best-loved pubs will be hosting this year’s Pint of Science, offering up fascinating talks on everything from atoms and galaxies to understanding neurodiversity.

Running from 18-20 May, this year’s festival marks the 13th edition of the annual event, which brings researchers out of the lab and into local bars in 42 cities across the UK.

In Exeter, venues including the Bootlegger, Arcadia and City Gate Hotel will transform into hubs of scientific discussion with informative talks, demonstrations, live experiments, and a multi-city pub quiz competition....

Exeter police donate festive treats to Age UK

Officers and staff in Exeter have been getting in the festive spirit by donating boxes full of Christmas goodies to elderly people this Christmas.

PC Chris Pusey started a Christmas collection at Heavitree Road police station in November.

Donations of food, drink and Christmas gifts came flooding in from officers and staff from the station and the police control room.

On Monday 15 December PC Pusey delivered 15 large boxes full of goodies to Kath at Age UK in Cowick Street (pictured).

Age UK will create hampers with the items, including bottles of champagne...

Eleven new centres to lead genomics project

Eleven new centres across England have been chosen to deliver the 100,000 Genomes Project.

The three-year project, launched by the Prime Minister earlier this year, aims to improve diagnosis and treatment for patients with cancer and rare diseases.

The initiative involves collecting and decoding 100,000 human genomes – complete sets of people’s genes – that will enable scientists and doctors to understand more about specific conditions.

A new TV programme telling the story of what life was like for Romans and Britons 2000 years ago involves a unique journey across Britain by helicopter with commentary from a University of Exeter archaeologist. ‘Roman Britain from the Air’ is on ITV at 8pm on 23 December. New legislation for houses of multiple occupation

Landlords of houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) in Exeter are being reminded of new licensing requirements that are set to be introduced in February.

Exeter City Council is offering a series of discounts for landlords affected by the new legislation, to those who register their properties before 15 January, undertake a training course or are part of a recognised landlords' association.

Last month (November) Exeter City Council approved an extension of its licensing for HMOs following a lengthy period of public consultation.

Ambulance service plea to keep 999 free

‘Keep the 999 line free for me’ is the urgent request being made by the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) ahead of one of its busiest times of the year.

This awareness raising campaign will run for at least the winter period and encourages people to question whether or not they really need to dial 999. Many of the 999 calls made to the service could actually be better dealt with by ringing the NHS111 number or seeking advice from a pharmacist or GP.

Fire crews called to building full of smoke

Fire crews were called to Exeter Airport this morning after receiving reports of a building full of smoke.

One fire appliance from Middlemoor and two fire appliances from Danes Castle were sent to the Vehicle Repair Centre at Exeter Airport shortly before 5.45am.

On arrival crews confirmed smoke inside the spray booth in a car repair centre.

There was a fire within a vehicle in the spray booth and crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet, a triple extension ladder and a thermal image camera to deal with the incident.

Rabbit-proof fence for Ottery cemetery

The Ottery St Mary Cemetery on Higher Ridgeway will now be protected from flower munching wild rabbits thanks to a £1,750 donation from local house builder Redrow.

Today Keith Miller, regional director of Redrow West Country, presented the Mayor of Ottery St Mary, Councillor Glyn Dobson with a cheque at Redrow's Otter Grange development, which is located next to the cemetery.

The funding will be used towards rabbit proof fencing to stop wild rabbits entering the grounds and causing damage to the grass and flowers that have been carefully planted by local residents.

Big variation in mobile coverage in the SW

Which? has teamed up with independent mobile coverage experts OpenSignal to reveal the best and worst mobile phone networks for across the UK, and found that the South West was the second worst region we looked at for coverage and some providers were much better than others.

The analysis of the different networks in the South West found a variation of 40% between the top and bottom 3G provider:

25% of SW residents splurge ‘on the card’

With the rise in interest-free credit cards and more South West residents looking to build their credit rating, it seems many are now looking to put purchases ‘on the card’.

A study by TopCashback.co.uk, released today, found that around half of South West residents believe that having a credit card has allowed them to live beyond their means, whilst 86 per cent say that it’s helped them to build a credit rating.

Around a quarter of South West residents are looking to credit cards as a way to spread the cost of spontaneous purchases and luxury goods.
