Some schools will have to fund their own crossing patrols

Devon schools that don't meet strict criteria will be asked to fund their nearby crossing patrols, it was decided this afternoon.

The county council is facing a £50 million reduction in its funding in the next financial year and, as part of that, is to reduce its school crossing patrol budget by around £100,000 per year in the next two financial years.

The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth has teamed up with local woodland co-operative AxeWoods to offer local people the chance to collect free firewood for a limited period this month.

Recent coppicing operations at one of The Donkey Sanctuary’s farms in Sidmouth have produced a large volume of willow that the charity is offering to local people to collect for firewood on key dates at the end of January.

Serious collision in East Devon

Police are at the scene of a serious collision near Colyton.

A car and tractor were involved in the collision at Broad Down in Southleigh at around 11.35am today (Wednesday 14 January).

Highways have been informed, as well as the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit who will carry out an investigation of the scene.

The road is expected to be closed for some time.

Road closures have been put in place at Horse Shoes and Chelsdon Cross.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to police on 101 quoting reference 290 of 14 January.

Batten down - gales are on the way

After many parts of Devon saw a sprinkling of snow overnight, forecasters are now warning strong winds and heavy rain are heading our way.

Gusts of up to 50-65mph are predicted across Devon reaching 75mph on the coasts.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Another Atlantic low pressure system is expected to deepen significantly as it tracks towards the UK. The strongest winds will initially be across England and Wales during the second half of Wednesday into early Thursday before moderating. This may also lead to large waves on some coasts of Wales and southern England."

Serious crash closes A39 in Devon

Police and other emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision involving a car and a lorry on the A39 near Bideford.

The lorry has overturned, shedding its load of logs across the carriageway two miles out of Bideford, towards Barnstaple.

Paramedics treated the car driver at the scene and he has been taken to North Devon District Hospital with potentially life threatening injuries.

Parking permits for Exmouth residents affected by sewerage work

East Devon District Council is offering a temporary parking solution to Exmouth residents in Camperdown Terrace, Trinity Road and Point Terrace, who are potentially facing a shortage of on-street parking spaces over the next three months.

From January to March, while South West Water is undertaking a programme of sewerage works, residents in those roads can buy - for just £10 - a monthly temporary parking permit for either Imperial Road Recreational Ground Long Stay or Estuary Long Stay car parks.

Warning of risk of snow and ice on Devon's roads

People in Devon are being urged to take extra care when travelling later today and overnight, with widespread snow forecast.

Localised showers are expected to turn wintry from around 6pm tonight onwards, with The Met Office issuing a yellow alert for the risk of snow, particularly on higher ground and in the north of the county. However, snow may fall across any part of Devon.

Devon County Council, the Highways Agency, and Devon and Cornwall Police are advising motorists to check the weather forecast and road conditions before setting out.
