Cranbrook to Host First eat:Festival Food and Drink Event

eat:Festivals will be hosting a food and drink festival in Cranbrook on Sunday 13 September 2026.

The festival will be happening in the heart of the town, on and surrounding the Tillhouse Road. eat:Festivals are a small social enterprise who have been delivering one day food and drink festivals in towns across the south-west for over 13 years. They are now accepting applications for all 2026 dates, including the Cranbrook one at www.eatfestivals.org/apply

Dozens of firefighters tackle thatch blaze

Firefighters tackled a large fire at a thatched property on the outskirts Exeter on Friday.

Three fire engines along with an aerial ladder platform from Exeter were sent to a report of curtains on fire within a property with a thatched roof at Little Johns Cross, Ide, just after 8.30 this morning.

Upon arrival the crew confirmed that the thatched roof was involved in fire and requested the attendance of seven more fire engines.

These appliances were sent from Topsham, Crediton, Newton Abbot, Cullompton, Exmouth and Torquay.

David Parish elected President of DCAA

David Parish, who farms dairy cows and free-range chickens in a family partnership at Uffculme near Cullompton, has been elected President of the Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA) for 2015, with this year’s Devon County Show being held from May 21 to 23.

David, 70, has been a pillar of the Devon County Show for over 30 years. He started as a Trade Stand Steward in 1984, then transferred to the Works Office and, since 1999, has been a hugely popular and hands-on Honorary Show Director.

Jamie Oliver helped a nine-year-old Exeter girl create a very special birthday for her terminally ill dad.

Katie Cowell wrote to the celebrity chef saying she and her dad were big fans and could he help make her dad’s birthday one to remember. Jamie immediately sent a signed copy of his latest book Comfort Food personalised to the family.

Former councillor awarded Freedom of the City

Long serving former Exeter City Councillor, Yolonda Henson has been awarded the Honorary position of Freeman of the City.

The award is recognition of her unstinting duty of public service over a total of 32 years elected service on the City Council. Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of six new Queen’s Counsel Honoris Causa, exclusively bestowed upon lawyers who have made a major contribution to the law of England and Wales outside practice in the courts.

Big increase in private tenant repossessions

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, is reporting a worrying 34% increase in private sector tenant repossession cases.

This is in comparison with the same period last year and shows that pressure on household budgets continues to hit hard.

Across all housing sectors, where a CAB adviser has assisted clients facing repossession, clients have avoided repossession in 80% of cases.

Cash boost to tackle homelessness in Exeter

Homeless people across Exeter and parts of Devon have been given a boost with the awarding of crucial funding to tackle the ongoing problem of homelessness.

Quarter of a million pounds has been awarded from the government’s Help for Homeless fund.

The successful bid was lead by Exeter City Council and includes Exeter, Teignbridge, East Devon, Mid Devon and Torbay.

An additional combined total of £35,000 will be donated by the local authorities involved in the project.

Crime continues to fall across the region

The latest figures for 2014 show that crime continues to fall across the region.

Recorded figures for January to December 2014 showed a decrease of 3.2% or 2,747 fewer offences compared to 2013, with reductions across a number of crime groups.

The updated picture shows the Force continues to see reductions in public order offences (down by 14.8%), theft (-10.7%), Burglary (-5.7%), and criminal damage has fallen by 5.9%.

Exeter based charity, South West Grid for Learning Trust, has been awarded a prestigious Bett award in the ‘ICT Leadership and Management Solutions’ category. Coinciding with Bett, the world’s largest technology in education show, the awards are considered the highest accolade in the industry.
