New SW food and drink awards

“Imagine one single person standing under a gazebo on a makeshift floor of cardboard boxes, cold from the wind and watching the rain come down. It is now three hours since someone stopped to buy something. So, why is he there? He is here because one of his regular customers might just want to buy some sausages this afternoon. This is why I started the awards scheme - to recognise these people and to thank them for what they do.”

Farmer’s daughter, Vicki Sargent, is passionate about the food and drink industry. So much so that, 18 months ago, the 32-year-old mother-of-two launched a...

Devon and Cornwall Police are reminding people that domestic abuse can happen to anyone and although Valentine’s Day is associated with love and romance, for some, it can prove a traumatic time of year.

The Force is running its ‘Is This Love?’ campaign which aims to raise awareness of the different aspects of abuse – emotional, financial, physical, and sexual.

Domestic abuse is the cruel misuse of power and control by one person over another. It can begin at any time, can be obvious or subtle and can happen suddenly or gradually.

Lollipop patrols reprieved

A reprieve for threatened school lollipop patrols, continued support for vulnerable people on welfare and extra winter road gritting are part of a package of new spending approved by Devon County Council’s Cabinet today.

The threat to reduce the number of lollipop patrols at the county’s schools to save £100,000 had been one of the key issues through the budget consultation process.

But council leader John Hart said he had found the extra money to continue the same level of school crossing patrols for the coming year.

But he said the council would still need to talk...

These love birds at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park are doing what comes naturally, but there can be a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make sure rare species continue to breed.

Paignton Zoo curator of birds Jo Gregson holds the European Studbook for the wrinkled hornbill. “It’s my job to collect and collate information from other zoos on hatchings, matchings and dispatchings for the species and to make recommendations for pairings.” Which means that Jo gets to play cupid.

There are 140 European Studbooks; the system is run by the European Association of Zoo &...
