School children to welcome teams to Rugby World Cup 2015

With excitement building ahead of Rugby World Cup 2015, schools are being offered the opportunity to be part of the ceremonies which will welcome the 20 participating teams to the Tournament in England and Wales.

Each of the 20 teams will be officially welcomed to the Tournament and their respective Team Base regions by local schools in September 2015.

The Welcome Ceremonies, delivered by Tournament Organiser, England Rugby 2015, will feature a performance by the selected schools, as well as a celebration of the local community and the game.

Devon council tax bills to rise

Devon County Council has agreed an increase of 1.99 per cent in council tax bills.

The increase will support spending of over £500 million including a reprieve for threatened school lollipop patrols, continued support for vulnerable people on welfare and extra winter road gritting.

There will also be an extra £100,000 to cushion bus service cuts and £40,000 for the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

The council tax increase will bring in an extra £6.2 million over the next year to help safeguard services.

A Devon couple who won a £8,000 dream wedding last October - thanks to the Mercure Exeter Southgate and Radio Exe - have been busy making plans for their luxury wedding celebration at the top Exeter hotel.

Exeter-based charity Rainbow Living has been given a golden boost by securing a John Lewis Golden Jubilee Trust secondment.

Police train call handlers to deal with suicidal callers

Call handlers at Devon & Cornwall Police are receiving enhanced training to deal with calls from distressed people threatening suicide

The move follows an increase in calls from distraught people threatening to harm themselves.

A core team of employees attended a specially adapted course designed to give them the knowledge and skills to better deal with intense phone conversations, ensuring the safety of the caller. Police are getting ready for the big West Country derby between Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle tomorrow (Saturday 21 February) at 1pm.

The all-ticket match is being played at St James Park and looks to be a bumper crowd.

Devon community projects TAP into funding

A funding project bringing together county, district, town and parish councils is kickstarting community projects across Devon and hopes to do more in 2015

The 'Town and Parish Fund' or TAP is the name given to the initiative whereby Devon County Council allocates £1 per elector per annum and district councils contribute 10p per elector, totalling around £600,000

This money is available for towns and parishes to join together to apply for funding that can make a difference to their communities.

Chinese New Year celebrations in Exeter

Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays and 2015 will be the Year of the Goat.

In China, it is known as the "Spring Festival" and marks the end of the winter season.

The University of Exeter will be celebrating the Chinese New Year on Saturday 21 February in Exeter city centre and on the Streatham Campus. At 1pm the Dragon and Lion dancers will parade through the city, starting in Buffet City, ending in Royal Albert Museum (RAMM).
