Chris Sampson, who is responsible for overseeing all the conservation and building work at Exeter Cathedral has been awarded the highest honour his profession boasts - that of the title ‘Master Mason’.

Exeter to get its own Monopoly edition

Since the beginning of last month the public has been voting in their many thousands for one of the West Country’s five capital cities to have their very own MONOPOLY for this year.

And Exeter has emerged triumphant, with the announcement being made today at Exeter’s Guildhall.

Devon’s capital city saw off the capitals of Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire in the poll.

Exeter commanded 34.3% of the vote ahead of Dorchester (26.1%), Taunton (15.3%); Trowbridge (14.7%) and Truro (9.6%).

Litter increase on our beaches

Piles of wet wipes are littering our beaches as more people choose to use moist cloths to remove make-up, replace traditional toilet paper and apply fake tan. According to the latest beach litter data collected by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and published today in its Great British Beach Clean report, numbers of wet wipes found on beaches increased by over 50% in a single year!

Camper van parking ban relaxed

A ban on motor-homes and camper-vans parking in EDDC car parks is being eased with effect from today (Thursday 19 March).

These vehicles may now park in the district council’s car parks during the daytime – but the ban on overnight parking of these vehicles remains in place.

East Devon District Council hopes that owners of these vehicles will choose to park in larger car parks for greater ease of access. Cost of dumping DIY waste to rise

Additional charges for certain types of waste will be brought in at Devon's recycling centres from 1 April.

Soil, rubble, tyres, plasterboard and asbestos have been charged for since 2011 but the same rules will now apply for plastic windows, plastic doors or door frames, baths or shower trays, shower screens, insulation materials, roofing felt and plastic downpipes, facias or guttering.

The College of Optometrists is warning people not to look directly at the sun during the solar eclipse on 20 March. The eclipse, which happens when the moon comes between the sun and the earth, will see most of northern Europe, including the UK, plunged into darkness for several minutes on the morning of the 20 March.
