Gordon and Moggie's 1,000 mile farewell to Exeter and Honiton charity

The chairman of disability charity SeeAbility was at the wheel of a 55-year-old Morris Minor in Exeter and Honiton on 6 September to bid farewell to old friends.

Gordon Ilett is making a 1,000 mile tour of SeeAbility locations across southern England to mark the end of his term as chairman of the charity, which supports people with learning disabilities and autism, who may also have sight loss.

Due to the weather forecast for torrential rain and high winds this weekend, event organisers have reluctantly decided that it’s not safe for the event to go ahead as planned on Sunday 17th September.

The event will now take place on Saturday 7th October.

Canine event specialist A Doggy Day Out will bring the immensely popular Big Bark to Exeter Racecourse for the very first time this on Saturday 7th October (previously planned for 17th September). The day is crammed with ‘wag-tastic’ doggy activities, many hosted by canine experts like Lucy Heath.

Wildlife continues to thrive after five years of protection on the Exe Estuary

Since 2018, two wildlife refuges have protected water birds on the Exe Estuary. Exmouth Local Nature Reserve’s wildlife refuge operates from 15 September to 31 December every year, while Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve wildlife refuge operates year round.

As Exmouth’s wildlife refuge is due to start again this month, people are asked to avoid entering both refuges at this crucial time of year when thousands of birds start their annual migration to feast on the rich food provided by the Exe. Both wildlife refuges are marked by yellow buoys.

Exeter centre enabling switch from diesel engines

University of Exeter engineers are working to replace diesel engines with zero-carbon alternatives on roads, rails and at sea.

While the switch to electric cars is accelerating, a vast range of other vehicles – from trains and off-highway vehicles (eg construction and farming) to ferries and fishing boats – are harder to switch to zero-carbon.

The Centre for Future Clean Mobility is tackling this problem, developing low-emissions power systems for a wide range of vehicles.

Runners and housebuilders collaborate to help local hospice

Devon charity, Hospiscare, has secured a £1,000 donation from local developers after an application from two of its charity runners.

Persimmon Homes South West received an application for its Community Champions scheme from Rachel Payne and Kate Smith, both of whom competed in races including the London Marathon 2023, to raise money for the hospice.
