Dementia UK shares the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for ahead of free clinics in Devon

Nationwide and Dementia UK’s free face-to-face clinics are returning to Nationwide’s Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Barnstaple and Exmouth, branches this September, offering specialist support in a safe, comfortable and private space for people to discuss any aspect of dementia.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia, offering life-changing support to families and individuals in the area. The clinics will take place throughout September, and appointments can be booked via Dementia UK’s website here .

Landlords in Devon could face mandatory licensing

Landlords in Devon could be forced to secure a licence under Government plans to tackle illegal immigration.

The Residential Landlords’ Association understands that the new Conservative Government plans to extend the scope of the mandatory licensing regime to tackle illegal immigration.

In a speech last week, Prime Minister David Cameron called for a new licensing scheme to tackle landlords who “cram” their houses full of illegal immigrants and powers to make it easier for landlords to evict tenants in private rented housing.

Fire started deliberately at public toilets

Fire crews were called to reports of smoke coming from a toilet block in Hamlin Lane, Exeter just after noon today (30 May).

One fire appliance from Middlemoor was mobilised to the incicent.

Upon arrival crews confirmed a small fire in single storey toilet block involving toilet paper.

One hose reel jet was used to extinguish the fire.

The cause was deliberate.

Hospiscare hairdresser Lesley Weeks received lots of hugs and kisses as she retired after 23 years of amazing service for the local end of life charity.

A party was held at the Hospiscare day centre in Dryden Road, Exeter, to celebrate her “fantastic contribution” to Hospiscare – staff and volunteers came along to thank Lesley for her support, friendship and to say goodbye.

There's still time to enter the Michelmores Charity Run, taking place on Thursday 11 June 2015 at 7pm and fundraising in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Starting the race is ultra-marathon runner Kevin Carr, from Woolacombe, who circumnavigated the globe running 16,300 miles in a record breaking 621 days.

Setting off from Devon in July 2013, Kevin is also the first person to run around the world solo and unsupported, traversing deserts, high-altitude mountain passes and arctic climes – taking in five continents.

Happy Fez-iversary to Martin and his fundraising army

Yesterday (28 May) marked the first anniversary of a unique fundraising idea to raise money for Exeter cancer charity FORCE.

The Fez campaign led by Martin Lynn has brought in close to £20,000.

It’s a remarkable achievement by the Exeter father-of-three, who is battling a rare cancer of the immune system.

He and some of his close lieutenants in the Fez Army got together for a celebratory lunch to mark the occasion and begin planning for the next year.

Once again this summer, Exeter will see Ping! table tennis tables springing up in public places around Exeter as part of the National Table Tennis Association’s Ping! initiative.

Active Devon, the local organisers ensured that last year’s event was a runaway success with over 30,000 people from across Exeter enjoying table tennis for free over the summer.

Leading local advice charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau is saying a “big thank you” to their volunteers by hosting a cream tea event later in the Summer.

At a time of financial pressures, the invaluable contribution made by volunteers is needed more now than ever.

Volunteers undertake a variety of roles. These include training as advisers and assessors, campaigning on social policy issues, working on Reception, helping out with administration, providing financial capability training courses, and even sitting on the trustee board.

RMT confirms new strike dates

The largest rail union, RMT, has confirmed that members will be taking 24 hours of strike action from 5pm Thursday 4th June through to 4.59pm on Friday 5th June in the current dispute over pay and jobs at Network Rail with a further 48 hours of action from 5pm on Tuesday 9th June to 4.59pm on Thursday 11th June. In addition there will be action short of a strike from 00.01 Saturday 6th June to 23.59 on Friday 12th June.

Police appeal following florist theft

Police in Newton Abbot are appealing for information following a theft in Ipplepen.

The incident occurred at around 2.05pm on Sunday 10th May at Hollyhocks Florists located at the Fermoy’s Garden Centre, on the A381 Totnes Road in Ipplepen.

Whilst the counter was unattended by staff the offender walked behind it and stole a handbag containing a quantity of cash.

Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident.

He is described as being aged, in his 50’s approximately 6’2” in height, and medium in build.
