New High Sheriff of Devon pledges to boost restorative justice

Devon’s new High Sheriff, entrepreneur Mark Ansell, has pledged to put Restorative Justice centre stage during his year in office, championing a system proven to support victims of crime and rehabilitate offenders.

Mark is the latest of three generations of his family to serve as High Sheriff of Devon, proudly following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather. While the tradition runs deep, his vision is firmly fixed on the future, bringing fresh energy and modern purpose to one of the county’s oldest civic roles.

Mark, 63, who lives near Bideford, currently...

Will you Race For Life?

Women in Exeter are being urged to grab their last chance to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Westpoint Exeter as there is just one week left until registration closes. Over 5000 women have already joined a ‘pink army’ ready to take on cancer in the 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events on 25 and 26 July, but there are still places left. One of those is inspirational mum Jess Gallaway whose world fell apart when she lost her brother Rhys to a brain tumour nine years ago. But every year the family do something special in memory of Rhys and pay tribute to the bubbly, carefree boy who...

Embarrassed BBC bosses appear to have ‘erased from history’ axed presenter Judi Spiers.

Just a month after she announced her last week on the station, two controversial Facebook postings seem to have been removed.

The first was a statement by BBC Radio Devon managing editor Mark Grinnell explaining his decision to drop the broadcasting star.

Another post, made by Judi and her team on the show’s last day, has also disappeared.

Observers believe it might be to do with the fact that both posts attracted more than 700, largely negative, comments.

The freehold of the historic pub has been acquired from Punch Taverns by Linda and Trevor Voaden and they have set about a comprehensive programme of renovation and refurbishment.

In just two weeks the couple have stripped the pub and created a very comfortable and contemporary environment while retaining many of the original features that remind you that the building is an historic Grade II listed property.

Call to back police fairer funding plea

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg says the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics highlight the need for a fairer approach to central funding of police forces.

Speaking as the Government released its latest national statistics for police performance, Mr Hogg has urged the people of Devon and Cornwall to back his Fair Funding campaign which demands Home Secretary Theresa May revisits the formula she uses to share out money between police forces.

“A reduction in recorded crime does not indicate falling demand on police officers,” said Mr Hogg.

The Ramblers has launched the Big Pathwatch, the nation’s biggest ever footpath survey, following new research that reveals path problems in England, including the South West, are on the rise.

With more than 8,750 problems recorded on paths in the South West and more than 86,000 in England, the Ramblers fears this isn’t the full picture and that the scale of the problem is far bigger.

The Ramblers needs as many people as possible in the South West to take part in the Big Pathwatch, which will for the first time build both a national and regional picture of the state of the...

We’re going cake crazy as we prepare for the Big Devon Bake Off – cakes are being found all over the Exeter hospice!

Whilst strolling in the garden our Hospiscare chaplain Nigel found two cakes tucked in a tree, housekeeper Wendy found them everywhere, ward secretary Denise discovered her desk smothered in creamy cupcakes, as did receptionist Sharon.
