Exeter to Celebrate Best of Local Food and Drink at Gate to Plate Festival

Exeter is set to host a celebration of the region's finest food and drink producers when the Exeter Gate to Plate Food Festival comes to Sidwell Street on Sunday 4 October.

The free, family-friendly event will bring together more than 70 food and drink makers from across Devon and the surrounding area, with most producers based within a 30-mile radius of Exeter.

Visitors can expect a wide variety of local produce including artisan bakers, farmers, brewers, orchardists, coffee roasters, delicatessens, sweet treats and an array of street food vendors.

East Devon District Council’s Knapp Copse and Trinity Hill nature reserves achieve Dark Sky Discovery Site status

East Devon District Council’s Countryside team is delighted to report that its recent application for Dark Sky Discovery Site status for two of the county’s nature reserves has been successful. Car parks at Knapp Copse Local Nature Reserve, near Putts Corner, and Trinity Hill Local Nature Reserve, near Axminster, have been officially recognised as great places from which to look at the night sky.

Everyday cosmetic and cleaning products contain huge quantities of plastic particles, which are released to the environment and could be harmful to marine life, according to a new study.

Research at Plymouth University has shown almost 100,000 tiny ‘microbeads’ – each a fraction of a millimetre in diameter – could be released in every single application of certain products, such as facial scrubs.

Deliberate fire started at public toilets

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a block of public toilets in Exmouth today (30 August).

Two fire appliances from Exmouth were mobilised after Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service received reports of smoke coming from a block of toilets in Jarvis Close, shortly after 12.30pm.

Upon arrival crews donned breathing apparatus and entered the building to put the fire out with one hose reel jet.

Firefighters then checked the building with a thermal imaging camera, and used positive pressure ventilation to clear the building of smoke.

Firefighters tackle Cullompton garage fire

Fire crews were called to a blaze in Cullompton last night.

Three appliances from Cullompton, Middlemoor and Tiverton were mobilised to reports of a garage on fire in Holly Way, Cullompton just after midnight.

On arrival crews discovered a garage attached to a house well alight and made pumps four. It was believed the roof and the house were involved.

A further crew from Tiverton were mobilised with the incident command unit and support vehicle from Honiton.

East Devon District Council's Countryside team is planning a Family Foraging event on Saturday 19 September, from 10am to 12.30pm at Holyford Woods, near Colyford.
