Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

Meridian Raw CIC, a local social enterprise, is offering 15 places on a free 14-week participatory photography course for the local Exeter community. Demand from business for commercial property in the South West rose for the eleventh consecutive quarter, while available space in the region fell for the ninth successive period, according to the latest RICS Commercial Market Survey.

Starcross pupils ride the Riviera Line

Pupils from Starcross Primary School recently took a free train trip on the Riviera Line to visit the Riviera Centre in Torquay.

The trip was organised by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership in conjunction with First Great Western. The Year 6 children had chosen to visit the wave pool at the Riviera Centre as their leavers’ trip. Mongooses prove selfishness lasts a lifetime

Researchers studying wild banded mongooses in Uganda have discovered that these small mammals have either cooperative or selfish personalities which last for their entire lifetime. The findings of the 15-year study are published today in the journal Animal Behaviour.

The researchers investigated the selfish behaviour of mongoose mate-guarding – where dominant males guard particular females – and the cooperative behaviour of ‘babysitting’ and ‘escorting’ the young.

Appeal after Exminster assault

Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault which took place in Exminster.

On Friday 19 June at 5.20pm a 34-year-old man was driving along the main road, near the Tesco Express store by the Church Stile junction, when an object was thrown at the victim’s car by another man.

The victim confronted the man and then he was assaulted. He suffered minor facial and arm injuries as a result.

Police believe there may have been several witnesses to this incident, including a man who helped the victim.
