Ride On is launching a new, free cycling programme aimed at beginners, people returning to cycling after a break, or anyone looking for a sociable ride to help them get back outside this summer.

Called Joy Rides, the sessions launch on Saturday 18 July and run weekly through to September, alternating between Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings to fit around work, family, and shift patterns. Each ride follows one of three easy, mostly traffic-free routes around Exeter Quay, the Exe estuary, and Topsham, led by trained ride leaders and open to all abilities.

Exeter student Paige Furzer had a lovely surprise when she started volunteering for us here at Hospiscare.

She discovered her Great Nan was the first patient at Hospiscare’s Exeter hospice and even met the Duchess of Kent who opened the hospice in 1992.

Paige, 19, who is studying journalism at Exeter College, said: “It’s a quite amazing coincidence. I’m thrilled to be helping the charity which provided so much support and comfort to my Great Nan and our family.

"I had no idea my Great Nan, Doris Quick was the first patient. I’m told there used to be a picture of her...

Intensive farming practices such as larger herd size, maize growth, fewer hedgerows and the use of silage have been linked to higher risk of bovine TB, new research has concluded.

A study by the University of Exeter, funded by BBSRC and published in the Royal Society journal Biological Letters, analysed data from 503 farms which have suffered a TB breakdown alongside 808 control farms in areas of high TB risk.

Dr Fiona Mathews, Associate Professor in Mammalian Biology, who led the study, said: “TB is absolutely devastating for farming, and it’s essential that workable...

Tesco to improve support to Armed Services

Tesco will significantly improve the support it offers war veterans and reservists, the retailer announced today.

Tesco has a proud record of supporting the Armed Forces dating right back to founder Jack Cohen, who set Tesco up with his demob money after serving in the First World War. Last year Tesco became the first retailer to sign up to the Ministry of Defence’s Military Corporate Covenant - a public commitment to do more to support serving personnel, veterans and reservists.

In a move designed to strengthen this commitment, Tesco will:

The Pavement Parking (Protection of Vulnerable Pedestrians) Bill is scheduled for its second reading in the House of Commons on Friday 4 December.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, has written to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin MP, and Devon’s local MPs, appealing for them to support the bill.

Councillor Hughes said: “This issue needs dealing with because bad practices adopted...

Supporters of the Exeter Chiefs can do their bit to boost the funds of the Exeter Foundation with a new initiative launched by the club.

We know there are occasions where season ticket holders, Gold Card and 1905 members are unable to attend a match-day game at Sandy Park.

That means places are occasionally empty within the stands, so the Exeter Foundation – the club’s official charity – are appealing for you to donate a ticket to the Foundation.

All money raised from the re-sale of these tickets will be donated back into the Foundation and later distributed amongst...

Charity asks: What would YOU wish for?

Exeter-based charity CEDA is highlighting some of the things that disabled people find difficult, not just because of their disability but because of the systems designed to help them.

What Would YOU Wish For? is a campaign which asks people what they would wish for if they could have anything. Many people dream of sailing round the world, becoming famous or flying to the moon. In a short video, CEDA asks some of its members what they would like to do. The answers include going to a nightclub, seeing a rugby match and wandering along the beach – things which most people would take...

Proposals to give police more control of firefighters

Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) currently oversee the work of police forces while separate bodies made up of councillors, called Fire and Rescue Authorities (FRAs), oversee firefighters. The Government is consulting on allowing PCCs to take over control of firefighters, replacing FRAs.

In a detailed response to the consultation, the Local Government Association, which represents all 46 fire authorities in England, says firefighters carry out almost annual 700,000 home safety visits. Firefighters are working with a range of health partners and schools to prevent poor health,...

She needs £70,000 for the trip and her treatment and her YOUCARING site is now close to the target.

A friend of Jo told the Exeter Daily she would be bowled over by the amount raised.

The friend added: "The kindness of people who don't even know Jo has been incredible. This trip...
