The South West ranks as the second most expensive region in the UK for driving lessons

For many young people, learning to drive is becoming an increasingly expensive milestone.

The research, commissioned by Monzo and conducted by Censuswide, surveyed 1,000 newly qualified drivers and found that learners across the UK spend an average of £1,218 on driving lessons. Combined with the average cost of a first car (£4,867), many young drivers are spending more than £6,000 before they've even considered ongoing costs such as insurance, fuel and maintenance.

Renewed appeal for witnesses to A30 crash

Police are renewing their appeal for witnesses to a collision on the A30 at Okehampton in which two elderly people were seriously injured.

Emergency services were called around 6.05pm on Thursday 12 November after the collision between and a DAF large goods vehicle and a Volvo S80 on the westbound carriageway at Sourton.

The Volvo was reported to have broken down in lane one at the time of the collision and officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the stationary car.

Exeter lawyers get knitting for Age UK

A 15-strong team of knitters from law firm Stephens Scown LLP have been brandishing their needles in aid of the Exeter office’s chosen charity, Age UK Exeter. Stephens Scown’s knitting club has knitted as many little woolly hats as possible for the Exeter branch of Age UK, in support of the charity’s nationwide campaign “the Big Knit”. The club, comprised of 15 knitters of mixed experience, have knitted 375 hats in total. Pioneering research boosts graphene revolution

Pioneering new research by the University of Exeter could pave the way for miniaturised optical circuits and increased internet speeds, by helping accelerate the ‘graphene revolution’.

Physicists from the University of Exeter in collaboration with the ICFO Institute in Barcelona have used a ground-breaking new technique to trap light at the surface of the wonder material graphene using only pulses of laser light.

It’s easy to assume that domestic abuse is an issue that only affects partners or ex-partners within a relationship. However, an increasingly more common form of abuse, with potentially devastating results, is set to challenge those inherent beliefs.

Since 2011, in Devon alone, there have been two domestic homicide cases where the murderer is in fact the victim’s child. The child in question is not a young adolescent, but a grown-up adult child in their 20s or 30s.

£500,000 reconstruction scheme for Trow Hill

A major £500,000 investment to reconstruct the A3052 near Sidmouth will get underway in January.

Trow Hill will be reconstructed and resurfaced between Steven’s Cross and Dunscombe Lane, as part of a seven week programme of essential maintenance unveiled by Devon County Council.

Ahead of the resurfacing work, drainage improvements are programmed to start from Monday 4 January 2016. This is anticipated to take three weeks to complete.

Drinkaware Club Hosts pilot launches

Devon and Cornwall Police have joined up the alcohol education charity Drinkaware to launch a pilot initiative in the region which aims to keep people safe at night.

Drinkaware in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Tony Hogg, and the Safer partnerships have launched a six month pilot of Club Hosts at nightclubs across the peninsula.

Two men have been charged following arrests made at the Plymouth Argyle Exeter City derby match this weekend.

Callum Leech aged 20 from Exwick Road, Exeter was arrested at Home Park, Plymouth and charged with being drunk in a sports ground. He has been bailed to appear at Plymouth Magistrates on the 9th December.
