This summer, Brixham’s Fish Market will come alive with flavour and festivity as the South West Sardine Festival arrives on Sunday 03 August 2025, bringing a vibrant new celebration to the heart of one of Britain’s most historic fishing towns.

Free to attend and running from 12:00 to 21:30, the festival invites locals and visitors alike to experience a day inspired by coastal traditions, from the South West to the Mediterranean. At its heart is the British sardine - abundant, sustainable, and caught right here in the South West.

Human skull found at Devon tip

A reminder is being issued to users of Devon County Council’s recycling centres to think about the waste which they are taking to the sites, so as not to waste Council and Police time.

It follows the discovery of a human skull in the general waste skip at Sutton Barton Recycling Centre near Honiton on Thursday (17 September). The centre was closed for a few hours as Police had to be called to the site to examine the skull. On closer inspection it was found that the skull had been used for educational purposes.

Man's body recovered from the sea

Officers were called at 1pm on Saturday, 19 September, 2015 by coastguards after reports of man’s body was discovered floating in the water near Prawle Point, Salcombe.

An empty dinghy was seen by a member of the public and after a search of the area by the Lifeboat a body was found.

The local man in his 80s was given CPR at the scene but was pronounced dead.

His family have been informed and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

An Exeter-based charity held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open their two new zero carbon energy ‘Satellite’ Landlord Supported Living Houses.

The event was followed by a drinks and canapés reception for VIP guests and supporters.

New research from SeeAbility, the national sight loss and disability charity, shows nearly four in ten (37%) pupils attending special schools have no history of eye tests. This alarming figure is made worse as children with learning disabilities are 28 times more likely to have serious sight problems than other children. There are 8,335 students in special schools in the South West and if these findings are replicated across the region 3,084 children with disabilities are missing out on the eye care they need. Family fun down at the farm

Families are invited to get stuck in at Lower Halsdon Farm, near Exmouth, on Sunday 27 September. Roy Powney, 78, from Exeter has been honing his bee keeping skills on Princesshay’s rooftop garden which is home to five hives and more than 60,000 bees.

Through Age UK Exeter, Princesshay’s Charity of the Year, Roy has been visiting the roof top garden every Thursday since April. Working alongside Jason Wallis, head bee keeper for Princesshay, Roy has been closely involved in caring for the bees which has been a passion of his from a young age.

Exeter Chiefs has become the latest independent business in the city to sign up to Exeter Pound.

The successful rugby club joins more than a hundred other traders to use the complimentary currency.

The Exeter Pound was given a special launch at Sandy Park yesterday (Saturday 19th September) at the pre-season friendly against Bath.

New Devon artist sells painting in US

Ottery St Mary-based artist, Abi Whitlock, is celebrating the successful sale of her first artwork through online art marketplace, Artfinder, just days after she joined the site.

The 23 year old whose application to sell on the site was approved on Saturday 5 September, sold one of her hyper-real acrylic paintings, ‘Adrift’ to a customer in Illinois on Monday 7 September for the list price of £3,400.

Abi has only recently committed to her art full time, recently moving to Devon with family after graduating from catering college.
