New report reveals UK's happiest places to be a dog

Exeter comes 9th in Dogs Trust's Happy Place Index, but we all have room for improvement

For dogs, a happy place can be somewhere physical, like cuddling up next to their owner on the sofa, dozing by the fire or rolling around in a muddy puddle. But it can also be a feeling, like the excitement of a new toy, the comfort of being with their favourite humans, or the relief of just being somewhere safe.

To examine the various factors that contribute to a dog's satisfaction, an academic has developed a new formula – the Canine Happiness Score (CHS).

Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink took home a Devon Tourism Award for the third year running at last night’s ceremony, held at the Holiday Inn in Plymouth.

Teignbridge rewards winners for recycling

The first batch of winners in Teignbridge’s Recycling Together Rewards scheme has been announced.

Community groups, trusts, charities and residents have all been named as winners in the scheme aimed at reducing the amount of food waste sent for disposal and encouraging recycling.

Newton Abbot Community Transport Association and Kingsteignton Swimming Pool and Recreational Association are the top winners so far scooping £100.

‘Fish fraud’ across Europe in decline

TOUGH new policies to combat fish fraud across Europe appear to be working, according to a new study.

The largest multi-species survey of fish labelling accuracy to date indicates a marked and sudden reduction of seafood mislabelling in supermarkets, markets and fishmongers in the EU.

Scientists in six European countries, including Dr Andrew Griffiths from the University of Exeter, tracked samples of the mostly commonly consumed fish, including cod, tuna, hake and plaice, after a series of studies going back 5 years had shown mislabelling in up to 40% of cases.

Devon and Cornwall police are reminding people during the busy run up to Christmas to keep their possessions safe from opportunist thieves. Officers will be working closely with partners in the community to roll out a number initiatives over the coming weeks.

People are advised to protect their Christmas purchases by storing them out of sight, so burglars aren’t tempted to steal them.

Extra Care housing scheme for over 55s event

People will have a chance to find out about plans for a new Extra Care housing scheme for the over 55s next week.

Exeter City Council is holding a drop in event to allow neighbouring residents to discuss the specialist housing scheme at Millbrook Lane. The information day will be held on Tuesday (8 December) in the Main Hall of Isca College of Media Arts, Earl Richards Road South, between 4pm and 7.30pm.

A former light and power station is producing energy once again...but now renewable energy from the sun.

One of Exeter’s most iconic industrial buildings, the former City of Exeter Light and Power Station - known today as the home to the popular Quay Climbing Centre, has just had a large solar array installed on its roof.

Yes – we’re ready to open our doors!

Exeter’s newest community centre, The Beacon, is holding its first public event this Saturday 5 December – a Christmas fair.

Come along between 1pm and 3pm and see all the months of hard work that the Beacon Vollies (you’d call them volunteers) have put in. They have sorted, cleaned, painted and even put up a new ceiling at The Beacon, which was formerly the Knight Club in Beacon Lane.

They have created a warm, light welcoming space to hold community events, private functions, meetings and already a number of local organsiatons...
