Teignbridge Council is offering residents the chance to recycle their real Christmas trees for free.

People can take advantage of the many ‘free tree’ recycling collection points on offer across the district. Anybody wishing to dispose of their tree can come along to any of the following sites:

Higher Woolbrook Park in Sidmouth is set to get brand new streetlights this year, following a routine maintenance inspection by Devon County Council contractors SSE.

In addition, in a separate scheme, Government funding will mean that 24,000 more lanterns across Devon will be converted to energy efficient alternatives by March 2018.

This follows a successful bid by Devon County Council to secure over £10m from the Department for Transport Challenge Fund.

Christmas tree recycling collection in Exeter

People in Exeter can recycle their Christmas trees in the New Year.

For those not on the City Council's garden waste collection service there will be an opportunity to take Christmas trees to one of the following sites on the weekend of 9 and 10 January

  • Car park at Mincinglake Valley Park (top end, off Stoke Hill near the community centre)
  • Car park at Heavitree Pleasure Ground (next to recycling banks, Whipton Lane near junction with Stanwey)
  • Car park at Holman Way, Topsham

Appeal after serious hit and run in Devon

Between 0215 and 0227 hours on Friday 01st January 2016, there was a serious hit and run incident on the A380 KINGS ASH ROAD, PAIGNTON, DEVON.

What has been described as a Dark Green Ford Motorcar was travelling on the A380 from MARLDON WAY towards TWEENAWAY JUNCTION in southerly direction. Just prior to LUSCOMBE LANE, the Green car has collided with a male pedestrian who was walking with his family.

As a result of the collision, the male pedestrian received serious injuries and the Green car failed to stop at the scene.

New research by Alzheimer’s Society shows that 39% of people in the South West mistakenly think that once a person with dementia stops recognising loved ones, they don’t benefit that much from spending time with them.

Police investigating a dangerous driving offence are trying to trace the occupants of a vehicle in Exeter after it may have been reversed into by a car attempting to escape from officers.

A marked police vehicle was rammed by a blue Ford Ka in Holly Road at around 11.30am on Wednesday 30 December.

Officers believe the Ka may have also reversed into a light coloured Peugeot 106 that had a learner plate on the bonnet.

Weather warning of more rain for Devon

The Met Office has issued another severe weather warning for Devon as heavy rain is set to return on New Year’s Day.

Forecasters say an area of low pressure will bring spells of persistent and at times heavy rain through Friday and Saturday before weakening.

Following a brief respite on Saturday night, a further frontal system will bring more rain to these same areas through Sunday morning before clearing away northeastwards during Sunday afternoon.

There could be some local disruption from surface water and river flooding looks likely.

Man rescued from flood water near Exeter

A man was rescued from his car after becoming trapped in flood water near Exeter this morning.

One fire appliance from Exeter Danes Castle, one from Exeter Middlemoor and the boat from Exmouth were mobilised to Burrow Road in Broadclyst at 5.30am, after reports of a person trapped in their vehicle in flood water.

On arrival, fire crews confirmed that the vehicle was in flood water, contact was made with the person trapped inside.

Crews used water safety equipment to escort the male from the vehicle to safety.
