New report reveals UK's happiest places to be a dog

Exeter comes 9th in Dogs Trust's Happy Place Index, but we all have room for improvement

For dogs, a happy place can be somewhere physical, like cuddling up next to their owner on the sofa, dozing by the fire or rolling around in a muddy puddle. But it can also be a feeling, like the excitement of a new toy, the comfort of being with their favourite humans, or the relief of just being somewhere safe.

To examine the various factors that contribute to a dog's satisfaction, an academic has developed a new formula – the Canine Happiness Score (CHS).

Review set for Corn Exchange block and South Street

A review is set to be carried out on the future of Exeter’s South Street and the Corn Exchange block in the heart of the city centre.

Members of Exeter City Council’s Scrutiny Economy Committee will be asked to back plans to carry out a review of the area to assess what, if anything, needs to be done to the location in the future.

Cllr Rosie Denham, Lead Councillor for Economy and Culture, stressed that the City Council was open minded moving forward but accepted that improvements could be made to the area in light of the changing dynamic of the city centre.

Police appeal after daylight burglary

Police are investigating after a burglar struck at a Teignmouth house while the owner was at home.

The offender entered the property in Barnpark Road through the back door around 4.20pm on Friday 19 February.

The owner heard a noise and when she went to investigate she found her handbag was missing.

The bag contained an iPhone, a Panasonic Lumix camera and a purse with cash and cards inside.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen suspicious individuals or activity in the road around the time of the offence.

New ‘green’ energy system for leisure centre

A new renewable energy system has recently been installed at Dawlish Leisure Centre, as part of the much needed upgrade to the building management system.

The new biomass heating system is fuelled by wood pellets, which burn more cleanly than traditional fossil fuels and are practically carbon neutral because they use natural resources.

Hundreds of Devon residents are growing increasingly angry over the ‘appalling’ customer service they are receiving from home appliance manufacturer Indesit/Hotpoint.

It comes as the firm is being besieged by complaints over the handling of an alert over potentially dangerous tumble dryers.

The problem is caused by fluff accumulating in the filter, which is very close to the heating element on these models.

Rare chance to see Grayson Perry tapestry

A rare chance to see a vibrant tapestry by artist Grayson Perry, created for his popular Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman exhibition at The British Museum, is set to be displayed at the National Trust’s Castle Drogo from Saturday 5th March.

The 15ft wide Map of Truths and Beliefs, created by Perry in 2011, will be part of the new Truth and Triomphe exhibition at the castle. East Devon praises tenants for paying rent on time

East Devon District Council’s recently published sixth annual report to tenants, which reviews the housing service’s performance over the past year (2014-2015), reveals that the council’s housing service is continuing to make positive progress (exceptional in some areas) with its housing stock and service to tenants.

Jewellery stolen in two Exeter burglaries

Detectives are appealing for information after several distinctive items of jewellery were taken during two burglaries in Clyst St Mary, Exeter.

Two properties in Clyst Valley Road were broken into while the victims were away on holiday.

During the first burglary, that happened sometime between Saturday 13 February and Wednesday 17 February, Australian dollars were stolen, as well as a number of unique and distinctive pieces of jewellery (crime reference CR/ 011053/16).

Managers at BBC Radio Devon have been dealt a bitter blow after one of their most popular broadcasters told them he was quitting the station.

Although no formal announcement has been made, the Daily understands Bill Buckley is on his way out.

A station insider has told us that he has been signed up by BBC Radio Berkshire.

He will join other big-name broadcasters Paul Ross, brother of Jonathan, and Anne Diamond, who became a household name on TV-am.

Mr Buckley’s departure will be a serious concern to BBC Radio Devon managing editor Mark Grinnell.
