Toby Buckland’s Garden Festival an outstanding success

The sun came out, thousands of people flooded in and a great day out was had by all. Garden lovers came from far and wide to experience the fabulous selection of nurseries and the inspiring talks given by garden experts.

Boost for beavers as project receives £150k

A national charity which aims to improve the quality of life for people and communities in the UK through its work with arts, environmental and community welfare organisations has given a major boost to one of Devon’s most important wildlife projects.

The Peter De Haan Charitable Trust has provided £150,000 of funding to the River Otter Beaver Trial – an East Devon project which is measuring the impact of England’s only breeding population of wild beavers. The funding will be used to support the next three years of the project.

Now five months old, Eversfield Organic’s puppy Rusty is to star in episode two of Channel 5’s ‘The Secret Life of Puppies and Kittens’ on Thursday 5th May at 9pm.

Rusty’s proud owners are Eversfield Organic’s marketing director, Anna Bury, and her partner Jon Elliot.

In December 2015, East Devon District Council and Seaton Town Council confirmed the intention to secure the long term future of Seaton Town Hall, through the transfer of the ownership from East Devon District Council to Seaton Town Council.

The average council in the South West will need to pay a staggering £19.4 million a year to the government to fund their flagship Right to Buy extension, new research by Shelter reveals today.

The policy, now being put through parliament as part of the government’s Housing and Planning Bill, would force local authorities to sell off a proportion of their council houses on the open market once they become vacant. The money would then be used to fund discounts of up to £100,000 for housing association tenants taking up the Right to Buy.

Marathon month for club runners

By mid-May, Lee Cooke the Gym Manager at Exeter Golf and Country Club Gym Manager will have run two marathons and completed an endurance 24 hour run for children’s charity, VICTA.

Despite only starting running two years ago, Lee has achieved what usually takes many years for most experience runners. Police continue to dig for clues at home of serial killer Fred West's friends

Police are continuing to investigate the garden at the former home of a paedophile couple, who knew serial killers Fred and Rose West.

Excavations began on Tuesday 3 May in the rear garden of a bungalow in Bradnich, near Cullompton, following historic intelligence linked to the former occupants of the council-owned property, David and Pauline Williams.

Investigations are continuing today and are expected to last until Friday 6 May at the earliest.

£100,000 grants for Exeter medical research leaders of the future

Two talented researchers from the University of Exeter have each been awarded £100k to further their work in developing our understanding of cancer and schizophrenia as part of a prestigious new grant scheme.
