An explosion of floral colour at County Show

The largest temporary structure at the Devon County Show on May 19-21 at Westpoint, Exeter will house an explosion of floral colour and scent.

Measuring 11,815 sq metres, which is bigger than a Premier League football pitch, the pavilion will be bursting with the sights and smells of spring.

Deborah Custance Baker, the chief steward of the crafts and gardens feature, calls it a ‘show within a show’.

Nationwide search for talented young musicians comes to Exeter

A nationwide search for talented young musicians to become the first members of the new National Youth Folk Ensemble will come to Exeter next month.

Applications have opened for a Sampler Day organised by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) at Exeter Phoenix on June 2 for young musicians aged 14 to 18.

Woman robbed and assaulted in Heavitree

Police are appealing to dog walkers in the Heavitree area of Exeter who may have witnessed a robbery.

On Wednesday, 11th May a woman, in her twenties, was robbed and assaulted as she walked her dog in Hamlin Lane playing fields between 6pm and 7pm.

The woman was pushed to the floor and suffered a number of minor cuts when the suspect used a sharp object to attack her. She did not require medical treatment but was very shaken.

The victim’s brown leather wallet was stolen during the incident.

Devon County Council appoints new chairman

Outgoing Chairman Cllr Christine Channon handed over to Devon County Council’s new Chairman, Cllr Andrew Moulding, at a meeting of the Full Council on Thursday afternoon (12 May).

Cllr Moulding has represented the Axminster Division as a Devon County Councillor for seven years.

He is also a Town and District Councillor and is currently Deputy Leader for East Devon District Council.

Axminster born Andrew was educated locally and directed his own company in the town for 24 years.

Super recyclers win cash prizes

An Exeter resident has won £200 in a prize draw aimed at encouraging people to recycle more.

Marie Pistorius won the cash after she took her earthenware slow cooker to Pinbrook Road Recycling Centre’s shop for reuse.

The draw was one of four held in April and May aimed at inspiring more people to recycle Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment (WEEE). Just 30 per cent of all unwanted ‘small’ electrical items in the UK are recycled.

The prizes were sponsored by the Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment (WEEE) Industry’s Distributor Takeback Scheme.

EU Farm Commissioner guest of honour at Devon Farm Business Awards

The most powerful man in European agriculture, EU Farm Commissioner Phil Hogan will be the guest of honour at the Devon Farm Business Awards, which will be presented on Wednesday evening, May 18, at the Westpoint showground on the eve of this year’s Devon County Show (May 19-21).

Alzheimer’s Society in Exeter is encouraging residents to confront dementia this Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May).

Charity staff will be providing information about dementia and how to live well with the condition at the John Lewis store in Exeter on Tuesday 17 May.

People will get the chance to ask any questions they may have about dementia; find out what support is available locally; and learn how they can support people affected by dementia in their community by signing up to become a Dementia Friend. Roman coin hoard find inspires artist

An ancient stone fragment and a huge hoard of Roman coins have inspired an artist whose work will be exhibited in Exeter. Irish artist Sean Lynch has used historic artefacts and the stories behind them to create videos, which will be shown alongside some of the objects which inspired them. Police appeal after body found in Brixham

Detectives have launched an investigation following the death of a 57-year-old woman in Brixham.

Police and ambulance were called at 11am on Wednesday 11 May after a local woman was found deceased in a field in Gattery Lane.

Detectives from the Major rime Investigation Team have launched an enquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as unexplained at this time.

A 65-year-old man, from Brixham, is assisting police with enquiries.
