Stagecoach South West has confirmed it is the headline sponsor of this year’s Exeter Christmas lights switch-on, due to be held in the city centre on 17 November.

The annual event attracts people from across the region and this year marks the first to be organised by Exeter’s Business Improvement District (BID).

This year there have been record levels of Primary Times readers voting for their favourite local family friendly places and people in Primary Times’ Reader Star Awards.

A charity that brings songs and smiles to older isolated people will launch in Exeter in December. The Golden-Oldies Charity, fondly just referred to as ‘Goldies’ and with Sir Cliff Richard as its Patron, started in the Bath and Bristol area 10 years ago. Founder Grenville Jones, a well respected West Country choir leader, had seen for himself how singing brought joy to so many people through his many choirs. The governors of West Exe School have announced that headteacher Sönke Beyer has left the school.

Crackdown on drivers using mobile phones

Devon and Cornwall Police and the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner are working with police forces across the South West to crack down on people using their mobile phones while driving.

It comes as figures from the RAC show that the number of motorists who illegally use mobile phones while at the wheel is rising.

1,714 motorists were surveyed and 31% of said they used a handheld phone behind the wheel. That compares with 8% in 2014.

Representatives from the Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are all set to switch on Exeter’s Christmas lights on Thursday 17th November.

Primary academy trust to run ‘virtual’ online open days

An East Devon primary school trust is holding ‘virtual’ online open days over the next few weeks, using technology to help parents decide on the right school for their children. The events will take place on 15 and 23 November and 6 December, and there will also be conventional open events on 22 and 30 November.
