Latest plans for Exeter’s fire-hit landmark hotel

The project to restore a much-loved Exeter landmark to its former glory is expected to clear another hurdle next week.

Members of Exeter City Council’s planning committee will consider plans for the Royal Clarence Hotel, which was gutted by a fire in October 2016.

Local company Nooko has been working to prepare the site on Cathedral Green since collecting the keys from previous owners Akkeron in April last year. Cotley Christmas Tree Farm welcomed a highly unexpected arrival in the summer of this year.

Cotley Farm owner, Helen Bowker, says “It turns out that the calf was born a little early and her mother didn’t have any milk at first. Even if she had, the baby reindeer was so small she couldn’t have reached the teats! So for the first 10 days of her life, I had to hand feed her with a bottle. Luckily she grew quickly and was soon able to feed from her mother – which was a relief as reindeer milk is 20% fat so is hard to substitute for a long period. Experts secure £5m to protect SW’s natural capital

A partnership of three research institutions, led by the University of Exeter, has secured a £5m award to help protect the beautiful natural resources and the jobs dependent on them in the South West.

Experts from Exeter, working with scientists at the University of Plymouth and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, will work with businesses, policy makers and other organisations in the region to help them enhance their activities and decisions by applying the latest technological advances, scientific research and understanding of the environment.

Giant Snow Globe brings festive cheer to Exeter Deaf Academy and Princesshay

A giant snow globe in the city has raised over £1,200 for Exeter Deaf Academy, Princesshay’s charity of the year. The snow globe allows passers-by to climb inside, play in the pretend snow and have a festive photo taken.

Princesshay’s Operations Manager, Andy Littlejohns said: “Exeter Deaf Academy is a local, dynamic charity which provides excellent support for the deaf community. The snow globe was so popular last year so we knew we wanted to bring it back, raising funds for the Academy in the process.”

Tesco Extra Exeter Vale is lighting up Christmas for a charity which provides treatment and therapies for children and young people throughout Devon with physical difficulties. Manager Ian Dyer, Community Champion Jo Evans and Tesco colleagues from the Russell Way store visited Vranch House to deliver an eight-foot Christmas artificial tree and help put up festive lights and decorations. Devon and Cornwall Police is urging the public to think carefully before they contact the police non-emergency 101 service this Christmas and to go online for their answers where possible, and also to remember that inappropriate calls increase waiting times for other callers.

Record attendances at philharmonic carol concert

Exeter Philharmonic Choir's two annual carol concerts at the city's cathedral saw record attendances this year.

The choir, one of the oldest established choral groups in Britain, is celebrating its 170th season.

Members chose to donate the proceeds of their retiring collection to Exeter Community Initiatives, a charity which runs community projects for vulnerable people in the city. The collection raised over £2,850.

The choir's next concert at the cathedral will be a performance of Verdi's Requiem on March 18th.
