If the price of groceries were to rise at the same rate as house prices, 86% of Brits would have to remove sausages from their diet according to a new study.

The research, carried out by Property Rescue, found that if our weekly shop was to rise with the same inflation rate as property, a pack of sausages would cost a whopping £10.26!

The humble banger would contribute to a £207.37 average weekly shop, 18 times that of 1973.

Conducting a survey, Property Rescue uncovered that if the rise was to happen, a third of the nation would require financial help with their shop. And prices are closer than you’d think.

Compared to 2006, potatoes, biscuits and cheese have all had inflated in price faster than the housing market, while alcohol and sweets are also pricier thanks to the recent sugar and alcohol tax hikes.

Interestingly, it would be the older generation that would be more likely to cut sausages from their shopping list, with over 90% of over 44-year-olds likely to do so.

Despite this, it’s youngsters who would suffer the most if groceries were to rise at housing inflation rates. Over 40% of 25-34-year-olds would require financial aid to complete a weekly shop, while a further quarter admitted they would struggle.

Danny Nieberg at Property Rescue said, “It’s been well reported the cost of a mortgage and rent has made it difficult for young people but if everyday items were to follow suit, it would be disastrous for 25-34 year olds.

“The cost of living continues to rise, and in many cases household goods and groceries are only a matter of pennies cheaper than if inflation was to rise at the same rate. It’s no wonder we’re seeing more people visiting food banks.”
