John Court 'The Work Between The Lines' Event Date:  Saturday, September 29, 2012 - 10:00 to Saturday, November 24, 2012 - 17:00 Venue:  Spacex

In The work between the lines, John Court’s first UK solo exhibition, new works will be shown alongside drawings and performances produced over the last fifteen years. His output includes performance, sculpture and video, but he considers all his work to be fundamentally concerned with drawing, in that drawing connects the elements of line, movement, space and time.   Court is severely dyslexic. He began drawing at the age of 19, using it as a means to comprehend and come to terms with the difficulties and negative experiences he had gone through at school. During this process he gained self-confidence through learning to read and write in his own way. The theme of control interests him, where the act of writing becomes an encounter with (dis)empowerment.   Spacex has commissioned a new performance work by Court to mark the end of the exhibition.

In pre-Christian Finland it was believed that the world was inhabited and ruled by spirits. Harmonious interaction with these spirits through ritual behaviour such as the cult of the Kotijumalat, or home gods, was of primary importance to the community’s well-being in an often hostile environment. Inspired by these traditions, Finnish artist Tatu Nikkanen has been giving shape to his own home gods using basic tools and scrap materials taken from the urban environment. This display brings together examples of his work with comparative material from RAMM’s World Cultures collections. www.rammuseum.org.uk

Contemporary folk three-piece Lau at Exeter Phoenix Event Date:  Sunday, November 18, 2012 - 20:00 Venue:  Exeter Phoenix

Lau are modern folk music's most innovative band. Brilliant musicians, thrilling performers and free-thinking visionaries. The warmth and excitement they generate with each new release, and at every gig, has culminated in armfuls of plaudits, including three consecutive years of being crowned 'Best Group' at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards. Their strength partly lies in the pool of knowledge they draw on. Kris Drever grew up on Orkney and is celebrated for his singing and guitar playing - his talents as an accompanist have been sought by folk stars such as Kate Rusby. A well loved performer in his own right, his first solo album, Black Water, landed him the Horizon Award for ‘Best Newcomer' at the 2007 BBC Folk Awards. Award-winning fiddler and composer, Aidan O'Rourke (‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ 2006 Scots Trad Music Awards), hails from the Scottish coastal town of Oban. A founder member of Blazin’ Fiddles, Aidan is a major talent and appears on over eighty diverse recordings. Whereas Martin Green is from south of the border, East Anglia raised. A true maverick, he is in constant demand for his accordion playing and has toured in the bands of Eliza Carthy, Joan Baez, Linda Thompson and many other great names of folk music. Green was short-listed for the BBC's coveted 'Musician Of The Year' in the 2008 Folk Awards. Lau's creativity transcends all the music they hold dear, creating a cutting edge sound which garners praise from far beyond the roots scene, and their humble beginnings.
