The Donkey Sanctuary is inviting volunteers to join them at Paccombe Farm near Sidmouth on Wednesday 7 November, to help carry out essential conservation work.

Volunteers are being sought to help carry out essential conservation work in woodland at The Donkey Sanctuary’s Paccombe Farm in Harcombe. Volunteers will join the charity’s conservation team and assist them with the traditional method of hazel coppicing.

This form of management allows light to reach the woodland floor and helps to create a habitat suitable for a range of birds and mammals including the hazel dormouse. Traditionally, coppicing would be used to produce small diameter wood which could be used for fencing.

Paccombe Farm is home to nearly 400 donkeys and not normally open to the public. Set at the higher end of the valley, it has approximately 90 acres of woodland with views across the picturesque hamlet of Harcombe and just a few minutes’ drive from Sidford.

The event is the perfect way to enjoy a day in the fresh air, help wildlife, meet like-minded people and learn some new skills.

  • Wear sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing to suit the weather conditions
  • Tools will be provided, but visitors should bring their own gloves
  • Hot drinks will be provided. Bring a packed lunch and a bottled drink or thermos

The Donkey Sanctuary works to transform the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.

This is a free event and no experience is necessary, however, booking is required.
