SWH (South West Highways Ltd) will be hosting two career taster days on 27 February and 4 March. The taster days will offer under-represented groups, in particular organisations that support people with physical or mental health issues, a chance to gain an insight into a career within the construction industry.

The taster days will take place at the company’s head office in Rockbeare and will involve a site induction, followed by outdoor activities such as block paving and finally a Q&A session. Each participant will also receive an SWH/NSFCA (National Skills for Contraction Academy) goody bag.

The second taster day will coincide with National Apprentice Week which falls between 3 and 7 March. National Apprentice Week is now in its seventh year and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

On 4 March a group of students from Combe Pafford school, a school for students with moderate learning difficulties, physical difficulties, ASC or complex needs, are attending the taster day and spending the day with the company.

SWH Training, part of South West Highways Ltd, were appointed last year as one of only 20 CITB National Skills Academies for Construction in the UK. The local company provides a wide range of construction training and engineering apprenticeship courses.

Anna Cooper, Project Skills Coordinator at SWH Training said, ‘this is a great opportunity for under–represented groups to gain an insight into the opportunities available within construction; offering an introduction to the different trades and opportunities on site’.
