The Swan reaches number 25 in Gastropub top 50

STAFF at The Swan in Bampton are celebrating this week after being named for the sixth year running as one of the top 50 gastropubs in the country (January 2022).

The multi-award-winning mid-Devon pub polled in at number 25 in the 2022 ‘Estrella Damm’ Top 50 Gastropub Awards.

Chef-patron Paul Berry, who co-owns The Swan with his wife and fellow award-winning chef Donna, said: “We can’t believe we have made the Gastropub top 50 list for the sixth year running and we have come in at number 25, especially after such a rollercoaster two years.

“We’re so proud and would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to our dedicated and hardworking team, who we couldn’t do this without.”

The ‘Estrella Damm’ Top 50 Gastropub Awards are voted for by food writers, executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators.

The ceremony is organised by the publican’s publication, The Morning Advertiser, which says the top 50 is the definitive list of the best gastropubs in Britain. This year’s awards ceremony was held virtually due to the pandemic and restrictions.

The Swan polled in at number 50 for the first time in 2017 and has stayed in the top 50 for the last six years including ranking as highly as 20 in 2019.

“We are so happy to still be included in this list. You only have to look at the other pubs placed between 100 and one to realise this is a very serious list. Thank you to Estrella Damm, the Top 50 Gastropub Award organisers and the Morning Advertiser for the amazing time and effort you put in.”

The Swan has retained its four AA Gold Stars as well as two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence for five years running and was named by the AA as the nation’s ‘Inn of the Year’ 2019.

The Swan was named Gold Tourism Pub of the Year 2018 at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards and was voted Best Dining Pub for 2018 in the Trencherman Awards.

Donna was also one of three finalists in the Devon Life and Trencherman Awards in 2018.
