South Devon Link Road Project Team construct haul road
Devon County Council and Torbay Council have announced that work will soon begin on a haul road at the South Devon Link Road site.
Contractor Galliford Try will be constructing the temporary haul road from the bottom of Hamelin Way towards Kingskerswell, to allow site vehicles to access culverts at the south end of the new road. This construction is due to commence in April.
The construction schedule is as follows:
• The haul road will be located within the current boundary of the new road.
• Site vehicles will gain access to the haul road via a newly constructed access and exit lane to Hamelin Way.
• A temporary reinforced plant crossing will be constructed at Edginswell Lane and site vehicles will then follow the line of the A380 towards Yon Street.
• The permanent false cutting is being created between Yon Street and Church Way Lane in front of Greenhill Road, which will reduce the visibility of construction traffic during the works.
• A temporary diversion from Yon Street to Greenhill Road will be constructed over the next few months: this will include a temporary construction plant crossing.
• The diversion will allow vehicles from Edginswell Lane, Huxnor Road and Yon Street to access Greenhill Road during the construction of the Yon Street overbridge.
• Once the temporary diversion is complete, works will commence on the Yon Street overbridge and the haul road will be extended through and up to Maddacombe Road.
Mayor of Torbay Gordon Oliver said: “The creation of this haul road is an important step towards the construction of the South Devon Link Road – it will help to minimise the number of construction vehicles around the route, and help keep everyday traffic moving normally.
“The haul road will be constructed off Hamelin Way and whilst it will be signed as a works entrance we would ask drivers to take care in the area and be aware of vehicles turning into and out of the site. The haul road will not, however, effect the traffic flow on the Torbay Ring Road”.
Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation said: “The construction of this temporary road has a number of benefits to residents and commuters as it will limit the amount of site traffic travelling on the main roads in the area, minimising delays and noise.
“In addition, this dedicated haul road will ensure that the project can remain on schedule, as site traffic will be able to carry out construction activity as required.”
Jim Watson, Project Director at Galliford Try said: “This temporary road will assist us to progress the construction of the South Devon Link Road with as little disruption for our neighbours as possible, minimising delays, noise and mud around residential areas.”
The 5.5km dual carriageway, which will provide the long awaited bypass for Kingskerswell, was granted full approval by the government in May last year: work began in autumn 2012 and is due to be completed by December 2015.
