Self build call to action

Residents and businesses are invited to a self-build event hosted by Teignbridge District Council on Friday 13 June at Exeter Racecourse.

The ‘self build call to action’ afternoon aims to help people get more information about how they go about building their own home. Guests can network, get advice from those in the know, look at various stands and exhibits and get involved with a question and answer session.

It comes at a good time as Teignbridge has formally adopted Plan Teignbridge, its comprehensive long-term blueprint for housing, employment and other development. The Plan, which guides where things go in the next 20 years, contains policies which will help make it even easier for people to look into self-build home projects.

Teignbridge planners, economic development officers and policy makers will be joined by a number of guest speakers including Ted Stevens, Chairman of the National Self-Build Association; Jackson Moulding, a community self builder from Ashley Vale, Bristol; David Hilton, an energy efficiency and self build expert; planning expert and author Sally Tagg, and mortgage and finance firm Buildstore.

Cllr Jeremy Christophers, Leader of Teignbridge District Council, said:

“Teignbridge is positive about self-build and as a Council we are looking to support local people who want to roll-up their sleeves and get stuck-in to being part the solution to housing problem.

“We hope people will take the opportunity to come along so they can find out from the experts about what’s needed before they think about building their own home.

“Teignbridge knows that getting better access to affordable and market housing is a priority for local people and there are lots of different ways to do this, including helping people to build their own home.

“The adoption of Plan Teignbridge unlocks these opportunities further for local families. We’re keen to make sure we help meet aspirations for home ownership and improve options for how people get on to the housing ladder. I encourage anyone interested to book early and come along.”

The self-build call to action afternoon starts at 1.45pm and finishes at 4.30pm.
