Free legal advice in Exeter for those in need available in June

Free legal advice from the University of Exeter’s award-winning Community Law Clinic will be available during a special event in the city this June.

The cost-of-living crisis and reforms to legal aid makes it harder for people to find pro-bono help. This is especially true for those in rural and seaside areas.

The clinic already helps people with issues ranging from housing, employment and immigration. Students and lecturers are now hosting a drop-in “Law in the City”event in Exeter city centre.

The support is designed for those facing law challenges who are not eligible for legal aid or cannot afford private services. The confidential advice gives them information about the next steps they could take.

The clinic also provides a valuable learning experience for law students, who gain hands-on practice under the supervision of qualified legal professionals.

The event will be held at the University of Exeter’s Innovation Hub, Princesshay, Dix’s Field, Exeter EX1 1GF on 6th June 2025 from 10am – 2pm.

The event is supported by Trowers and Hamlin, Exeter and the Community Law Clinic works in partnership with Citizens Advice, Teignbridge.

Kim McDonald, Senior Lecturer and Director of the Community Law Clinic at the University of Exeter, said: “Since we began in 2017, the University of Exeter Community Law Clinic has been committed to bridging the justice gap, helping individuals navigate an often complex, confusing, and costly legal system.

“Amidst the cost-of-living crisis, ensuring everyone has access to essential legal assistance is paramount. Too many people do not have access to justice or legal aid. Our work will help empower individuals facing legal challenges intensified by the current economic climate and provide a lifeline to those navigating complex legal issues without adequate support.”

The initiative also provides our students with invaluable practical experience. By working alongside experienced professionals and tackling real-world legal challenges, our students will develop the skills and empathy needed to be effective advocates for justice.”

All Community Law Clinic services are provided at no cost and are completely confidential. People who need assistance can go to the Law in the City session, no appointment is needed, or can send queries to a2jclinic@exeter.ac.uk or immigrationclinic@exeter.ac.uk.
