East Devon District Council has a message for readers of local and national newspapers in the district.

The message is: If you put your old newspapers into the recycling bin, within seven days they may well be back on your doormat in the form of the latest edition. By recycling in this way, you reduce the number of trees felled for paper-making.

This great news is part of a campaign that EDDC is running this summer thanking residents for recycling, encouraging them to keep recycling and urging others to join in so we can pass the 50% recycling rate and head towards our target of 60%.

The campaign is funded by Aylesford Newsprint, the company that buys the Council’s recycled paper and processes it into fresh rolls of newsprint for use by the newspaper industryArtwork carrying the Thank You message and the newsprint information have been attached to the sides of the district’s waste collection lorries and will be in your area in the coming weeks spreading the word.

A second panel reminds readers that every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees from being cut down to make paper.

The promotion was offered as a bonus for EDDC supplying Aylesford Newsprint with good quality used paper.

Councillor Iain Chubb, EDDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It’s great news that the firm we supply with our recycled paper wants to help us encourage still higher rates of recycling in East Devon.

“I’d like to thank all the households who help us to take more material out of landfill and put more into recycling. As it says on the posters – just one more push...”
