Overnight resurfacing and repairs planned for Exe Bridges

Exe Bridges will undergo essential repairs and maintenance during overnight work in March and April.

Work to reconstruct and resurface the two bridges will start on the evening of Monday 4 March and is expected to take around seven weeks.

Most of the work will be carried out from 6:30pm to 7am, although some daytime work will be needed on occasions.

The existing road surface is in need of reconstruction. The scheme will also involve re-waterproofing the North and South bridges and repairs will be carried out to defective manhole covers, kerbs and gullies.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “The Exe Bridges are heavily used every day so it’s essential this work is carried out, while making sure disruption is kept to a minimum, which is why the bulk of the work is being carried out overnight. This scheme will ensure the road surface is in good condition and structures are protected.”

Councillor Yvonne Atkinson, Chair of Exeter HATOC and Devon County Councillor for Alphington and Cowick, said: "Alphington Road is one of the city's major routes into the centre and this will affect car and bus journeys. I will be working with Officers to ensure that diversions are well sign posted and with advance notice so you can better plan your journeys, and I’m assured that pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained throughout the scheme."

Councillor Carol Whitton, Devon County Councillor for St David's and Haven Banks, said: “The Exe Bridges are a major route into and out of the city for many and are badly in need of these carriageway works to ensure that the road surface will be protected from water ingress and is fit for purpose for many years to come. Clearly there will be some inconvenience to users, but this will be minimised with the contractor agreeing to work as far as possible during night-time hours.”
