Ofsted praise for East Devon school

Pupils at an East Devon village primary greatly enjoy coming to school and achieve standards which are well above average, according to education inspectors.
They say Woodbury Church of England Primary is a good school with outstanding features.
Pupils would encourage other children to attend the school and parents are unanimous in saying they would recommend it to others, say the inspectors.
“Achievement has improved since the previous inspection, partly because pupils are very eager to learn and partly because the quality of teaching has improved,” they say.
“Teaching is consistently good and occasionally outstanding.
“Most pupils attain well above the national average by the age of 11. The great majority make good progress from their starting points.
“Pupils behave exceptionally well in and out of lessons. They greatly enjoy coming to school, feel very safe and well cared for and would recommend the school to anyone.
”Attendance levels are consistently high. This reflects pupils’ enthusiasm for school.
Ofsted inspector John Laver spent two days at Woodbury last month and his report has just been published.
He says children get off to a flying start at Woodbury.
“Children in Reception make outstanding progress in developing personal and social skills and acquiring language and numeracy skills in response to outstanding teaching,” he says.
“Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils make good progress and often outstanding progress in reading.
“Disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs are well supported, both in and out of lessons, and share in the good progress.
“Pupils greatly enjoy the out-of-school clubs and the range of trips, including residential visits.
“Pupils’ eagerness to learn is one of the school’s strengths. Their keenness in lessons and willingness to support each other contribute strongly to good progress and the welcoming, friendly environment.”
Headteacher Nigel Tancock is well supported by all his staff and continues the drive to improve the school still further.
And Mr Laver says Woodbury clearly shows the capacity to get even better in the future.
To continue to improve, Mr Laver says Woodbury should ensure teaching is mostly outstanding by providing teachers with more opportunities to observe best practice amongst their colleagues and raise attainment in writing, especially for boys.
