The swimming pool at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre is reopening tomorrow (5 February), Teignbridge District Council has announced.

The leisure centre is offering a ‘Free Swim Sunday’ as a thank you to everyone for their support and patience during the closure period. Anyone wanting to enjoy a dip is being encouraged to visit.

Free Swim Sunday will be between 8.30am – 2pm on Sunday 8 February. Anyone visiting can use the pool for free.

The pool had been closed for checks and repairs to be carried out after a flood damaged equipment in the pump plant room. The pumps have been fixed, the pool filled and water is back to its usual temperatures.

Cllr George Gribble, Teignbridge District Council’s executive spokesman for communities, leisure and recreation, said:

“We are delighted the pool is reopen for business and look forward to welcoming back our members and clubs.

“The council’s prudent financial management of the insurance meant that losses relating to the closure, damage and loss of income is covered meaning minimal impact to the public purse. We’re also looking at implementing even tougher systems onsite to prevent something like this happening again.

“Customers have been very patient and we thank them for remaining supportive throughout the closure. It is good news that we are back to normal and we would encourage all our members – plus anyone who hasn’t been before – to visit Newton Abbot Leisure Centre and see what it has to offer.”

Swimming clubs, schools and other groups that use the pool are being kept up to date so they can make arrangements to resume their training and coaching sessions.
