New cycle hire scheme launched at Exeter St Davids

In partnership with First Great Western a Brompton folding bike hire scheme, Brompton Dock, has now launched at Exeter St Davids station.

The Exeter Daily was invited to the launch of this exciting new service, where Brompton Dock Managing Director Mark Antwis teamed up with First Great Western General Manager (West) David Crone to demonstrate the simplicity of the system and just how quick it was to assemble the foldaway bikes - 7.7 seconds is the record.

The cycle hire schemes provide members with 24-hour access to Brompton folding bikes, which can be taken on trains and other forms of public transport, even during peak times. The bikes can be stored at home, in the office, folded in to the boot of a car and taken everywhere with you.

Available on both short and long term hire, the bikes aim to suit everyone’s needs and provide a flexible, healthy, cost-effective, practical, time-saving and fun approach to travel.

There are 40 docks to store the foldaway bikes, however First Great Western have ordered double that number to ensure there is always a bike available should you wish to use the service.

First Great Western General Manager for the Central Region Steve Tyler said:

“We, as a business and as individuals, have a responsibility to reduce the impact we have on our environment.

“Working with Brompton Dock, I am delighted to help launch this service to our passengers and to encourage cycling while enabling more people to bring a bike on board our services.”

To take advantage of this scheme members must register online at www.bromptondock.co.uk, they can then use text messages to take out or return a bike, report a fault or reserve a bike or empty bay.

Brompton Dock has arrived just as we witness a real push for cycling and sustainable travel throughout the UK. The Brompton Dock -cycle hire scheme reflects initiatives from the Department for Transport to improve the network of sustainable modes of transport, in particular cycle-rail integration, throughout the UK."

Mark Antwis, Managing Director of Brompton Dock, says:

“We are very pleased to be working with First Great Western, helping to integrate cycling into the company’s network. Brompton Dock offers the train operator’s customers a simple, affordable and flexible way to travel to and from railway stations. It exploits all the advantages of the Brompton, a popular folding bicycle that may be carried unrestricted at any time on trains and buses.”

He added that by the end of 2012 Brompton Dock will have installed 15 docks throughout the UK, in train stations, universities, a local authority and the UK HQ of a global corporation. “The order book for next year is strong, including many more installations for train operating companies.”
