The Met Office has issued another weather warning as further heavy downpours are expected to hit the South West tonight.

Outbreaks of rain, which will be persistent and heavy at times, are expected to spread east across southern England overnight and Wednesday morning.

Many parts of Devon have already seen large rainfall accumulations over the past few days and therefore this further rain may cause come minor local surface water flooding. Lightning may be an additional hazard.

The public should be aware that some local disruption to transport looks likely.

The Exeter-based agency’s chief forecaster said: “A frontal wave is expected to move in from the southwest later today, bringing some heavy rain to southern England.

“Whilst there remains some uncertainty in the exact location of the heaviest rainfall, accumulations of 20-40 mm could be possible quite widely within the warning area, whilst 50-60 mm is possible in one or two places.

“Rain is expected to become increasingly confined to the south east through Wednesday.”

This weather warning is valid from 9pm today until 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday).

The five day forecast for Devon is as follows:

Today:

A dry and bright start for northeastern parts, before cloud and outbreaks of rain, already affecting the far southwest, quickly spreads northeastwards. The rain will turn heavy over the moors, becoming patchier through the day. Feeling slightly warmer than yesterday. Maximum Temperature 18°C.

Tonight:

Second band of rain soon spreads in from the southwest turning heavy. This should clear the region by dawn, leaving a dry end to the night. Muggy but windy. Minimum Temperature 15°C.

Wednesday:

A largely dry day with some sunny periods. A peppering of showers will spread in from the west later, with a strengthening breeze. Feeling cool. Maximum Temperature 19°C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

A mixture of sunshine and showers throughout with the risk of thunder and hail at times. Turning breezy in the showers and feeling rather cool.
