Mediaeval Baebes Illuminate the Night with a Magical Torchlit Procession

Lit by the warm glow of flaming torches and accompanied by a musical fanfare of medieval instruments and drums, the Mediaeval Baebes’ procession will magically wend its way towards Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 6th December.

Commencing at 18.50pm from H&M on the High Street, step into a world of enchantment.  The pageantry will commence with a lighting of the chalice ceremony, symbolically ‘awakening the flame of old’ as described in the torchlit inspired lyrics of the new Christmas song ‘December.’

Dressed in flowing gowns and carrying the flickering flames to guide the way, families, musicians and reenactors are invited to join the Mediaeval Baebes.   Dress up.  Hold a lantern aloft.  Beat a drum to accompany the sounds.  Be part of the living tapestry of joyful melodic pageantry.  Or, just experience the spectacle as it passes by, before culminating at the entrance to the beautiful Cathedral.

Renowned for their soaring harmonies, stunning costumes, and performing with a plethora of exotic historical instruments; the Mediaeval Baebes will honour the twelfth month as they celebrate the beauty and passion of all things mydwynter.

Exalting the true spirit of Christmas, this evening of music, theatre and dance will showcase well-known Christmas carols and traditional folk songs.  Captivating storytelling will reveal the folklore and meanings woven into the lyrics, alongside ethereal choral settings of ancient and romantic poetry.  In addition, the magic and mystery of the season will be entwined with tracks from the forthcoming album ‘The Spinning Wheel.’

The Spinning Wheel, marks three decades of enchanting performances and traces the turning of the year, from January’s renewal through the fires of May to autumn’s winds and the ceremonies of mydwynter.  The album is available for pre-order, accompanied by an exclusive download of the song ‘October,’ ahead of its official release in February 2026.

In celebration of the Mediaeval Baebes’ 30th Anniversary, a special 2026 Calendar is now on sale.  The new Christmas single ‘December,’ featuring ‘January’ as the B side, is due for release mid-November.

The Mediaeval Baebes are one of the most successful female-led, early music and folk ensembles in Europe.  They have released eleven studio albums and won an Ivor Novella Award for their performance on the BBC serialization ‘The Virgin Queen.’  They received two Emmy nominations and a Royal Television Society award as the featured artist alongside composer Martin Phipps, for the TV theme tune of ITV’s hit show ‘Victoria.’

Collaborating on Orbital’s ‘Ringa Ringa’ in 2023 led to number 6 status in the album charts; and in the same year, their unique siren call joined The Wellermen, as part of their ‘Explorations’ remix album.

Step into a world of wonder and be immersed in glorious merriment.  Concert tickets are now available from www.mediaevalbaebes.com at a cost of £32.50 each and £15.00 for a child.
