Devon and Torbay libraries are set to burst with colour, sound, and imagination this autumn as Libraries Unlimited unveils its exciting new programme, running from 1st August to 31st October, under the vibrant theme ‘Get Creating’.

Far from the quiet spaces of the past, libraries will host everything from craft workshops and discos to live theatre and concerts. Visitors can learn to make musical instruments, explore bugs, build fantasy houses, or create watercolours, mosaics and screen-prints—all within their local library.

Libraries will transform by day and night. Children can rock out in afternoon discos, while older residents can enjoy over-60s dance nights. At Exeter Library, things take a mysterious twist with an Agatha Christie-inspired Library Lates, inviting guests to play detective.

A standout event is StoryKind at Paignton Library, where storyteller Sara Hurley offers a unique experience for those aged 12 and over to unwind with stories—lying back on cushions and blankets in a calm, reflective space.

Other highlights include adding to Barnstaple’s community-built Reading Tree with artist James Lake, joining a sea swimming and art day at Saunton Sands, and watching Coppice Theatre’s enchanting show How to Catch a Book Witch.

Rae Hoole, Creative Communities Producer at Libraries Unlimited, says:

“It’s really exciting to see people engaging with these events and the joy it brings. Libraries offer creative opportunities you simply can’t find elsewhere—and certainly not at such accessible prices.”

Thanks to Arts Council England funding, most events are free or low-cost, ensuring access for all.

Events will be held at Barnstaple, Exeter, and Paignton Libraries, with additional activities at smaller branches.
