There comes a time for all of us when we look at our wardrobe and despair. Generally, the clothes we wore last year are now completely off-trend or such poor quality that one summer has worn them out. For most people, this time comes at least once a year and usually around the start of spring. We have been hiding away indoors, covering up with cosy layers and generally forgetting that spring and summer even exist. If it sounds familiar, now is the time to start thinking about the kind of wardrobe you want in 2020, but it’s also the time to consider investing in some higher quality garments.

Buying clothing of better quality will create a wardrobe you can rely on year in and year out and, contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have the cost the earth.

Familiarise yourself with quality clothing

To be able to buy high-end clothing of good quality, you need to know how to recognise it. Essentially, you need to consider both the fabric and the construction of the garment (how well it has been stitched together) as this will result in a longer-lasting piece and a better fit, which will work season after season. There should be no light visible when you hold the stretch the seams and threading should be even and tight on the inside and outside. Some workwear and outerwear garments like blazers, dresses, and coats should have linings that protect the inside of the item.

In terms of quality fabrics, you should be looking for natural fabrics like cotton, linen, wool, leather, cashmere, silk, and velvet. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are generally cheaper and less durable.

A simple test for quality is to run your hand on the fabric to ensure it is smooth, i.e., and it is not rough, fuzzy, or pilling. The more familiar you become with quality clothing, the quicker you will be able to identify the poor-quality ones.

Do more online shopping

Online shopping is the norm for many people and, when it comes to building a high-end wardrobe for less, it’s a fantastic tool. Many online marketplaces enable independent designers and vintage dealers to share their beautiful garments with the world in a way that they never could before. You can also use online shopping to find excellent deals from high-end chains such as Monsoon discount codes and exclusive online sales and special offers.

Don’t fall for trends

There are many stores out there which specialise in fast fashion, capitalising on the need many of us have to follow the latest trends. Trends, however, are often the enemy of high quality as these garments are created to fit a moment in time. They are not designed to be worn year after year, and you can feel that in the quality of the fabric and construction. Save your money for garments that express your personal style and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Plan ahead

When it comes to investing in the particularly expensive pieces, it may be worth creating a wardrobe budget and calendar. For example, if you know that you would like to buy a winter coat or summer dress from a brand, start saving a little each month well in advance. This will enable you to get those key pieces without having to rely on credit cards or store cards.

Embrace second-hand clothing

Finally, don’t dismiss the idea of buying second-hand items from charity shops or vintage boutiques. These shops are like treasure troves for unique and designer garments which are often in like-new condition.
