Exmouth-based children’s author Chris McGuire is enjoying international recognition after his latest book, Blast from the Past, was shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 Scribe Awards.

The book — a fun-filled chapter story based on the beloved 1980s cartoon The Raccoons — was one of only five titles shortlisted globally in the Adapted Novel category by the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers. The Scribe Awards honour the best in books adapted from TV, film, and games.

Although the top prize went to a novelisation of cult horror hit Terrifier 2, Chris says the nomination was a “dream come true”.

“I couldn’t believe Blast from the Past made the final five,” he said. “It’s such a brilliant thing to know people have enjoyed your work. And the awards were at Comic-Con in San Diego! I’ve always wanted to go — maybe next year!”

Chris, who previously worked as a children’s TV producer for CBBC, Nickelodeon and Disney, is known for his knack for humour and storytelling. He helped launch Hacker the Dog at CBBC and now writes books full time.

His love for The Raccoons runs deep:

“I loved Cyril Sneer! So writing as him and revisiting the world of Evergreen Forest was amazing.”

Commissioned by Candy Jar Books in collaboration with the show’s original creator Kevin Gillis, Blast from the Past reintroduces classic characters to a new generation.

The book is available now from Candy Jar Books and online retailers including Blackwell’s. Chris’s latest title, Crooks and Nannies: A N.A.U.G.H.T.Y. Beginning…, is also out now — continuing his mission to delight young readers with heart, humour and a healthy dose of mischief.

“There’s always next year,” Chris laughs. “Comic-Con… here I come?”
