The RAMM, or Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, has been given a grant by the Government Museum Renewal Fund. This is a fund that helps to support the development and the sustainability of museums up and down the United Kingdom.

The grant, which comes to £114,202, is going to help RAMM continue its mission when inspiring, educating, and engaging the community. This is being done through diverse collections as well as through programming. The funding is going to be used to support the activities offered by the museum, including the shop, the cafe, and the tours they regularly conduct.

The Egyptian Tour is a Popular Offering

The Egyptian Tour is a very popular offering by RAMM. Their Ancient Egypt Tour is 40 minutes long and goes through the whole collection. Visitors are also given the chance to visit the tomb of Shep en-Mut. You can learn about the gods, as well as view amulets and canopic jars. It’s not surprising to see that the Egyptian tour is such a big part of the museum’s offerings, especially when you look at Egypt’s growing popularity in the media.

Podcasts which include In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg and Afterlives with Kara Cooney are some of the most popular within the genre. The BBC also saw huge viewership with their documentary, Ancient Egypt - Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings. Even in gaming, Egypt is seeing a sharp rise in popularity, with numerous slots based on the theme. Eye of Horus Megaways is just one of them, and features amulets, hieroglyphics, and depictions of the god Horus himself, showing how fascinating this period of history is, and how much it plays a part in our lives today.

This all helps to support how needed the RAMM museum is, and how important their tours are to not only educate, but also to entertain.

Keeping the Museum Going

The funding given to the museum is to keep tours and other events going. The museum often hosts free and low-cost events, with funding helping to support these too. While the funding is a welcome boost, it’s also going to help the museum serve its audience in whole new ways, which could be very beneficial for the local economy.

With that said, civic museums across the country are also still facing several challenges. Many museums are still waiting to receive critical funding, but for now, it looks like the RAMM museum is safe. Investments like this are vital, as they can generate significant returns. Statistics show that £3 of economic return is generated for every £1 invested in the public sector.

With the museum being given the critical funding needed to move forward, it’s huge for the local area, and it’s also great news for history buffs. With the museum being so popular with tourists, funding like this not only helps the museum to continue putting on tours but also potentially opens new exhibits, which will contribute to the area more as time goes on.
