Exeter Dissenters’ Graveyard exhibition and Heritage Open Days

By invitation of Exeter Historic Buildings Trust: an exhibition of artefacts from Exeter Dissenters Graveyard will be displayed in the Great Hall of St Nicholas Priory and the national and historic context of the Graveyard will be explored. A rolling display will showcase important Dissenters, local and national. The exhibition is from 2pm to 5pm on Friday 9th September.

The exhibition draws attention to an important strand in England’s history; the story of those Protestants who dissented from the strictures of the Church of England in the 16th to 19th centuries. At one time nearly 40% of the population of Exeter were Dissenters.

St Nicholas Priory (EX4 3BL) is situated in The Mint, a lane which runs from Fore St (just down the hill from The Mint Methodist Church} to Bartholomew Street West.

The Dissenters Graveyard will be open from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 11th and Sunday 18th of September in addition to its usual openings on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

When open there is an opportunity to walk through the restored graveyard and browse the information boards and QR coded information on the histories of the Graveyard, of Dissent, of the monuments and of the people and families buried here. A lapidarium displays the large architectural fragments discovered during the renovation of the site.
