Exeter care home supports Remade Charity’s ‘Sew it, don’t throw it’ project

Cumberland Grange Care Home in Exeter are supporting Exeter’s Remade Charity’s new ‘Sew it, don’t throw it’ project which is open to the local community to go along and join.

Remade is a new project funded by the European Social fund for those who are registered unemployed or economically inactive and looking to move into employment, self-employment or education.

It is a combination of practical learning, working on upcycling, recycling and reuse projects as well as other group sessions, access to short courses, one to one activities and support with working towards individual work or training related goals.

The ‘Sew it, don’t throw it’ project is open for all to join, totally free of charge. No previous sewing experience is required as you’ll learn basic skills at the workshop. Cumberland Grange and Remade Charity are encouraging all with a sewing interest to come along, either socially or to learn new skills. The first session was a hit and some of Cumberland Grange’s very own residents got involved and have started to make their very own lavender bags where they will use the home grown lavender from the garden.

Mica, Home Services Advisor at Cumberland Grange said: “Remade Charity reached out to us after we were recommended to them. We have a fantastic open plan, modern, light and bright space on our top floor which can be used by charities, businesses or groups to hold workshops, training and/or meetings. So far we have held one ‘Sew it, don’t throw it’ workshop which was so much fun. No sewing experience required, trust me, I have limited knowledge but learnt some very interesting techniques from Jane within only a couple of hours. We would LOVE to see more of our local community come along and join us. We have a real laugh and a good chat the whole way through. Light refreshments are provided, too. All totally free of charge. I have to say thank you to Jane as she is fantastic and brings everything with her which everyone is welcome to use, it’s just brilliant.”

The sessions run on a Thursday morning 10.30am – 12pm, so please do give Cumberland Grange a call if you would like to go along and join in the sewing fun – 01392 357 270.

Our varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active, and provides a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities.

We’re making our homes as safe as possible and will ensure that all new residents and staff are vaccinated before moving in or working in our homes.  Please do give us a call on 01392 357 270 if you are looking for care or need any further help.
