A man who was caught driving dangerously near Exeter has been jailed.

Jonathan Bumford, 25, from Paignton, was sentenced to three months in prison at Exeter Crown Court on Friday (7 August), having pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

Bumford was charged with dangerous driving following an incident Sunday 24 August 2014 when he drove his Mitsubishi car during the early hours of the morning through a police road block on the C19 road at Haldon Hill.

Despite the efforts of officers to stop the vehicle Bumford continued to drive onto the A38 travelling at speed in excess of 100mph in the direction of Exeter.

A pursuing police vehicle was unable to stop the vehicle and shortly afterwards Bumford was discovered in his vehicle having left the road at Sandygate roundabout just off the M5 at Exeter.

He was uninjured and was detained for driving dangerously and taken into custody.

Following today’s hearing, the officer in case, Police Constable Dave Stephenson said: “Jonathan Bumford’s actions were reckless and dangerous. He put not only himself but others, including police officers at risk and it is very fortunate that no no-one was seriously injured as a result of his actions.

“This sentence sends a clear message to people who drive irresponsibly without total disregard for other road users.”
