Nearly 200 people turned out for the Devon Blue Light day at South Dartmoor community college in Ashburton yesterday (Tuesday)

It saw members of the disabled community from all across Devon assemble in the sunshine to meet Devon’s emergency services.

They were given the opportunity to try out various sporting activities from tag rugby to soccer and cycle training to wheelchair basketball.

The opening of the event was performed by the Police pipes and drums band, decked out in traditional pipes attire.

Local musician, Dan Fraser provided entertainment throughout the day.

The event, which is the first of its kind to be held in Ashburton, was set up to help people with disabilities become more confident and independent in the community, as well as help them feel safe.

It hoped to help break down any barriers that exist between disabled people and the emergency services, so people feel more comfortable in reporting hate crime.

“The Blue Light Day is an engaging and inclusive way for people with disabilities to meet those organisations who provide emergency services” said Chief Superintendent Paul Davies.

Top bosses from Devon & Cornwall Police including Assistant Chief Constable Paul Netherton, Chief Superintendent Paul Davies and Superintendent Glen Mayhew attended the event to engage with the disabled community.

The event was supported by Devon and Cornwall Police and other public, private and charitable organisations.
