Three local men have completed the challenge of a lifetime by cycling the length of the country to raise funds for Exeter charity Rainbow Living’s third Rainbow house.

Over 13 days, Duncan, Will and Jools spent an average of eight hours a day in the saddle cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End. The trio braved torrential rain, lashing winds, and mile after mile of vertical ascent followed by steep slippery descents. Herds of cows, flocks of sheep, punctures, saddle sores and overall tiredness may have slowed them down, but they were not deterred during their 1,000 mile journey.

Says Will: “This has been such an emotional challenge. There were some huge highs – cycling through some stunning landscapes – but when the aches and pains really kicked in and you’re faced with a steep climb, there were admittedly also some lows! We were overcome by emotion at the end of the ride, when we reached Land’s End and saw our families waving and cheering. It has been an amazing experience, we are very proud and so thrilled to have raised money to help Rainbow Living achieve their third Rainbow house.”

The trio’s fantastic efforts have so far raised an amazing £1,408 for Rainbow Living, all of which will go towards the charity’s third Rainbow house, enabling another group of young people to move out of the family home and into supported living in the community.

Ruth Airdrie from Rainbow Living said: “Massive congratulations to Duncan, Will and Jools for completing this epic cycle – what an amazing achievement! We are very grateful to all three for the time, effort and dedication they have shown, and for the funds raised, all of which will directly make a real difference to the lives of young adults with disabilities in the area.”
