March is proving to be a busy month for the Young Farmers Club with members taking part in a whole host of competitions and activities.

Young Farmers Club is an organisation that dates back to the 1920's and was started to give young people in the countryside a way of socialising with other young people in their areas. Today there are over 700 clubs in England and Wales, 39 of which are in Devon alone!

The beginning of the month saw the Devon Federation of Young Farmers Club (YFC) hold their entertainments, choir and member of the year competition on Saturday 1st March 2014 at Exmouth Pavilions.

Around 250 people watched members of the group perform both songs and sketches. The event read like an awards ceromony with many of those taking part winning prestigious titles for their performances. Cheriton and Tedburn YFC will go on to represent Devon at the South West Area Competitions weekend in Newquay on Sunday 16th March following on from two of their members winning best actor at Saturday's event.

A choir and member of the year competition also took place. Tarka Group were victorious in the choir competition, whilst Holly Gilbert and Sarah Beliew were recognised as members of the year.

The first weekend of March also saw a team comprising of Becky Grist, Ross Thompson, Caroline Trude, Kirsty Reed and Mark Glanvill from various clubs around Devon Young Farmers take part in the Senior Debating speaking competition. The event took place on Sunday 2nd March and saw the team announced as winners.

And the busy month of March does not stop there for the young farmers.

This weekend young farmers from across Devon will be joining members from Wiltshire, Cornwall, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset in Newquay, from 14th to 16th March for their annual South West Area Weekend, where they will compete in a range of competitions including; public speaking, netball, ten pin bowling and disco dancing.
