An exciting family community festival held by East Devon District Council in Honiton on Saturday featured the official unveiling of a special Queen’s Diamond Jubilee sculpture.

The new sculpture on the side of Honiton Leisure Centre has been in place for a little while, but was formally celebrated and officially unveiled at 1.30pm by East Devon District Council's Deputy Chairman, Councillor Christine Drew, as part of the event.

The mosaic sculpture was designed by six-year-old Alfie Gibbins from Fenny Bridges near Honiton after the previous EDDC Chairman, Councillor Peter Halse, asked young people to draw their ideas for a sculpture to celebrate young people last year for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Hundreds of enthusiastic children and young people living in East Devon entered the competition. Alfie's design won and he worked with local artist Gordon Field to turn his drawing into a real life sculpture.

Councillor Christine Drew, EDDC Deputy Chairman and Member Champion for Children and Young People, said: “Children and young people are a vital part of every community and are our future, which is why EDDC run these community festival events throughout the district.

"The afternoon promises to be full of fun and games, I would urge residents to come along if they can. I am really looking forward to seeing Alfie's sculpture, and officially unveiling it”.
