Players from Exeter City Football Club will be donning their Sugar Smart Exeter t-shirts this Saturday (November 25), for their warm up before their league match against Accrington Stanley.

Sugar Smart Exeter is an ambitious campaign to encourage the community to come together in tackling the amount of sugar people in Exeter consume.

Exeter City Football Club led the way in this initiative and were the first organisation to make Sugar Smart pledges in Exeter.  Some of their pledges include stocking healthier food and drink in their outlets, reducing sugary food and drinks, introducing Sugar Smart education for children, and funding healthy living activities as part of their CITY Community Trust’s Children’s Challenge.

Julian Tagg, Exeter City Football Club chairman said:  “We will be proudly sporting our Sugar Smart Exeter t-shirts for this Saturday’s warm up, as part of our commitment to promoting the campaign across the city.

“We are taking direct action here too, looking at providing healthier alternatives on sale, and will continue to look at ways to help our local communities get healthier.”

Ruby Entwistle, Sugar Smart Lead for Devon County Council’s Public Health team said:  “It’s important to make it clear that the campaign is about the city getting Sugar Smart, not sugar free.

“We’ve been very pleased with the positive response from local organisations, who have really got behind the campaign to start improving our food in the city.  Our aim is to help make the healthy choice, the easy choice, not to take away people’s options.”
