Traditional Devonshire cheesemakers, Quicke’s, have been inundated with awards at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show.

Both Quicke’s Vintage Cheddar and Oak Smoked Cheddar came first in class, Mature Cheddar came second in class, and their Goats’ Milk Cheese came third. Oak Smoked Cheddar then went on to win ‘Best Dairy Product with Added Flavour’ – an enormous triumph, and the first significant trophy for this cheese.

Organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS), the Great Yorkshire Show 2016 took place between Tuesday 14th July and Thursday 16th July, at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate. England’s premier agricultural show; each year the event attracts around 130,000 visitors over the three days. Prize winners were announced throughout the duration.

Quicke’s frequently receive awards for their traditionally handmade clothbound cheeses – the latest accolades include gold medals for their Vintage and Elderflower Cheddars at the British Cheese Awards 2016, along with a silver medal for Extra Mature. One of Quicke’s eleven cheese varieties, it is extremely exciting for Oak Smoked Cheddar to be so highly commended at the Great Yorkshire Show. Created using the most balanced of Quicke’s mature cheddars, the carefully selected truckles are cut into slices to ensure the flavour fully infuses the cheese as it is cold-smoked with oak chips from the trees on the family’s estate. Delivering a naturally gentle, smoky taste, followed by delicious creaminess – Oak Smoked’s award recognition is truly deserved.

Quicke’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Tom Chatfield, comments: “The cheesemaking world is really exciting – every year fresh talents and exceptional new cheeses emerge. This makes it an even greater joy that Quicke’s cheeses continue to achieve such success. ‘Best Dairy Product with Added Flavour’ is a huge class, and we are enormously proud to have Oak Smoked shouted about so loudly! The popularity of all of our eleven varieties demonstrates our team’s dedication to producing consistently great cheese – we are really excited to see what the rest of 2016 will bring!”

The Quicke family has been farming in Newton St Cyres since the reign of Henry VIII and making clothbound cheddar on Home Farm since the 1970s. Using original recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation, with milk from their specially bred herd of grass fed cows, Quicke’s multi award winning cheddar is still made by hand using traditional techniques.
